I’ve created the ultimate decoder to the determine if a VC will invest in your company based on deciphering their answers… "Would love to see more traction." = No "Let me know when you have a lead." = No "It's a bit early for us." = No "Circle back once you've hit some milestones." = No "We're focused on other sectors right now." = No "Let's keep in touch and stay updated." = No "We’re prioritizing our current portfolio right now." = No "This is intriguing—just not the right fit for us." = No "Come back when you’re raising your next round." = No "We’re worried about the market timing for this." = No "We're watching the space closely but not ready to invest yet." = No "This is interesting, but we’re staying heads-down on our current investments." = No "It’s not within our core thesis right now." = No "Come back when you have some anchor customers." = No "Our fund is currently fully deployed, but we’re happy to stay in the loop." = No "We’re looking for something with a bit more differentiation." = No "We're hesitant about the competitive landscape." = No "We’d like to see a bit more revenue consistency." = No "We have concerns about scalability at this stage." = No "We’d love to see more validation from other investors." = No 👻 = No

  • Another great post on founder updates. Completely underutilized in their importance for attracting repeat investments and getting introduced to other investors in network. No investor is going to double down in the next round after getting ghosted on updates for the last 12-18 months, but it happens more often than you’d think.

Ever wonder what top founders put in their updates? Here’s the secret formula 👀 End-of-year updates are your chance to show investors why they bet on you—and why they’ll want to keep betting big. I've now received over 500+ investor updates (probably more) and here are the sections that I have found the most helpful and that helps build excitement and trust: 1. High-Level Highlights 🏆 Start with a brief summary covering major wins, growth milestones, and strategic progress. This sets the stage and gives investors a quick understanding of the overall health and direction of the business. 2. Financial Snapshot 💰 Share concise, clear metrics like Monthly Recurring Revenue (MRR) growth, churn rate changes, or cost savings. Investors want to see quantitative progress—whether it’s record revenue months, reduced churn, or increased signups. The goal here? Transparency and clarity. 3. Product Developments & Roadmap 🔄 Give a rundown of new feature launches, enhancements, and product stability improvements. This shows that the team is actively improving the user experience and pushing the roadmap forward. Highlight any major product milestones, like introducing key features that unlock larger enterprise deals. 4. Sales & Customer Wins 🚀 Highlight revenue-driving moves like landing enterprise clients, increasing sales conversions, or adding notable new accounts. Investors love seeing traction and brand credibility, so spotlight any new partnerships or well-known customers joining the roster. 5. Team & Hiring Needs 👥 Share updates on key team members who’ve joined, especially in critical roles. And if you’re hiring for leadership positions, use the update to tap into your investors’ networks for introductions. 6. Challenges & Learnings 📉 Address setbacks or lessons learned. Whether it’s a pivot, a slow revenue month, or lessons from high churn, show your resilience and growth mindset by outlining steps to overcome these issues. 7. Goals for the Next Quarter 🎯 Lay out clear goals, whether they’re related to revenue, product milestones, or customer satisfaction. This gives investors insight into what’s next and how they can support the company’s mission. 8. Market & Competitive Insights 🌐 Share insights on market trends, competitor activity, or shifts that could impact your business. This context shows investors that you’re thinking strategically about your position and adapting to the broader landscape. 9. Brand & PR Highlights 📣 Showcase any recent media coverage, awards, or endorsements. Positive press can elevate your brand’s credibility and allow you to also get more engagement from your investors on the posts. --- Regular, structured updates keep investors engaged and informed, transforming them into advocates. A well-organized investor update not only shares wins but fosters long-term support and trust. #startups #venturecapital #investorrelations #fundraising
