Last week, Loudoun County Fire and Rescue (LCFR) was honored to welcome Dr. Mark Piehl from 410 Medical at our December Blood Drive. Dr. Piehl is the co-founder and Chief Medical Officer of 410 Medical, the developer of the LifeFlow PLUS, a hand-operated rapid infuser that allows clinicians to rapidly deliver blood or fluids to critically ill patients requiring volume resuscitation. LCFR EMS Supervisors use the LifeFlow PLUS during the administration of whole blood in the field. 410 Medical recently created a challenge coin program to recognize providers who save the life of a critically ill patient and use LifeFlow as part of their life-saving medical care. Captain Josh Pebler, Lieutenant Rob Cunningham, Lieutenant Steven Shuhayda, Firefighter Joseph Dundas, and Firefighter Amanda Sconfienza were recognized for an incident in June involving a patient with a critical gunshot wound who received two units of blood during a short transport to the hospital. Captain Kelly Myers, Firefighter Sean Burrows, and Firefighter Charles Green were recognized for an incident in August involving a patient with a critical gastrointestinal bleed in which the patient received two units of blood during a short transport to the hospital. The rapid administration of whole blood played a significant role in the positive outcome for both patients. Last week, 21 sworn and civilian personnel graduated from the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office 61st Basic Crisis Intervention Training (CIT) program. The CIT program equips first responders and partner agencies with the knowledge, skills, and strategies to effectively and compassionately assist individuals experiencing acute emotional, psychological, or situational crises. The Loudoun County Combined Fire and Rescue System was proud to have three members in this class!
