Jaguars 🐆, the largest cats in the Americas, are sacred to many Amazonian Indigenous nations. Today, we share this story from A’i Cofán leader Shakira Yumbo and member of our Indigenous partner organization Alianza Ceibo, who reflects on her elders’ understanding of the relationship between shamans and jaguars.  Over the next days, we’ll be sharing stories and reflections from storytellers and community leaders about what jaguars mean to them. "For me, it was a moment of awakening. Her sustainability lesson, as well as her brilliant and sensitive style of teaching, has remained with me into my adult years. I still save water and electricity in this delightfully countercultural manner. "Washing laundry less frequently is a mindful way to conserve resources and cut costs. In the U.S., we’re influenced by advertising that makes us believe clothes should be cleaned after just one use because they need to smell fresh—but that's not always necessary, especially with the stuff we only wear at home. "Upon reflection, which other habits can you trace back to the influence of advertising? 🎨📝 Today we're sharing a painting by artist Marieke Mertz, a certified naturalist from the Pacific northwest, and a poem by Esther Chase, founder of Lovethe.Earth, a new consumer education and sustainability nonprofit in southern California. 👀 The Rufous Hummingbird, Selasphorus rufus, is one of the smaller hummingbirds. Males are easily recognized by their brilliant orange-copper plumage and red iridescent throat feathers, while females and young birds often appear green or brown. 🌸 This feisty bird is a pollinator favorite! They are known to vigorously defend a patch of their favorite flowers against intruders, including larger birds. 💫 Native to North America, they undertake one of the longest migrations relative to their size, traveling round-trip from Mexico to Alaska every year to nest. ⚠️ We chose to highlight the Rufous because their population is declining due to habitat loss, causing a Near Threatened conservation status. 🌱 What can we do to help? Plant native species so they have plenty to eat! 😋 Rufous hummingbirds are especially attracted to red tubular blooms, such as penstemons, red columbine, paintbrush, gilia, scarlet sage, and California hummingbird sage. They will also feed on sugar-water mixtures at hummingbird feeders. 👀 Long before our founder became a sustainable shopper, she picked up a pair of flipflops as an impulse buy at a big box store. Little did she know, the brand is actually a woman-led environmentally friendly company which makes their goods right here in the USA!
