We're excited to spotlight Assistant Professor Qi Cai of LSU’s Biological and Agricultural Engineering department, whose research is transforming the fight against pediatric cancer. With a $75,000 Provost Award grant, Professor Cai and her team are developing an innovative eyedrop gel to treat retinoblastoma, a rare eye cancer that affects young children. This treatment aims to improve accessibility and reduce invasiveness, especially for families with limited healthcare resources. The gel uses Angiopep-2, a peptide that targets cancer cells and helps deliver drugs directly to the tumor, crossing the blood-brain barrier. Innovation is a team effort - and this year, LSU’s Inventorship Showcase spotlighted just that. Taking place last Thursday, this event celebrated the ingenuity and dedication of our community across FY 2019-2024.   Together, we celebrated 110 granted patents with contributions from over 200 inventors, 146 creative works, and the recognition of 6 senior members and 7 fellows inducted into the National Academy of Inventors (NAI). Together, these awards and achievements highlighted LSU’s depth of talent, innovation, and drive.   Events like this remind us of the collaborative spirit that drives innovation. #GrantedPatent: High-Precision 3D Modeling System Creating accurate 3D models is essential in industries like healthcare, manufacturing, and entertainment, to name a few. However, capturing complex shapes, especially shiny, reflective, or complex surfaces, has always been a challenge - until now. This newly patent technology combines a unique light source, polarization adjustments, a camera, and advanced processing techniques to create detailed 3D models with unmatched clarity. Louisiana’s shrinking wetlands have long been a challenge—but LSU faculty are bringing fresh, innovative ideas to tackle it head-on. Assistant Professor Aaron Bivins, supported by an LSU Big Idea Research Grant, is working alongside colleagues Matthew Hiatt, Giulio Mariotti, and Tracy Quirk to develop cutting-edge solutions for wetland restoration. By harnessing the potential of microorganisms, they are developing faster, more efficient ways to retain sediment and grow vegetation, making significant strides toward a sustainable solution. By studying the Mississippi River delta’s complex natural systems, this team is pushing the boundaries of environmental engineering to develop a faster, more efficient process for wetland restoration.
