This month, 35 years ago I started my career in the insurance industry - I know, I know you must all be saying - I don’t look old enough 🤣!! Seeing the increase in diversity, especially ethnic diversity in the city compared to what it was 35 years ago, is truly something. This post is not about my woes and challenges, it is to say thank you to my friends and colleagues who have at some time over these past 35 years, helped and supported me … you know who you are and I thank you so much 🥰. I also want to shout out to Equity City, iCAN: The Insurance Cultural Awareness Network and The LTL Collective and specifically Junior Garba ACII , Godwin Sosi Cert CII, Kishan Mangat, Ajay Mistry ACMA and Teniola Tijani for creating these spaces and for all of the incredible work you do - I have truly benefited 🫶🏾. I am often asked, what would I have told my younger self when starting my career … so here you are: 1. Find the right mentor / sponsor who will give you a different perspective, help you to remove blockers and unleash your confidence. 2. Join networks … they are a great safe place to make meaningful and long lasting and trusting connections. 3. Don’t get stuck - seek out opportunities where you can support on projects, CRG’s (sometimes this might have to be from the side of your desk!) job shadowing or secondments 4. Speak to people (in and outside of your org) who are doing the role you see yourself doing in the future. So … here’s to even more years in this industry, I doubt however it will be another 35!

We would like to round up our #HiddenFigures series with Shardae Carr from Asta Capital Limited. We chose Shardae as a Hidden Figure because she leads by example, showing her daughters and those around her that ambition paired with resilience can break barriers. Through her guidance, she paves the way for young people to enter the insurance industry, empowering them to believe in their potential. Her quiet strength lies in uplifting others while fearlessly pursuing her own dreams, leaving a lasting impact on her community. #LTLCollective #ladiesthatlunch #HiddenFigures #blackhistorymonth #bhm #unsungheroes #reclaimingnarratives

Next up, for our #HiddenFigures series, we have Benji A. from Aon. We selected Benji as our Hidden Figure, for her unwavering positivity, dedication to uplifting others, and commitment to making sports accessible to all. She actively participates in member events and volunteers, embodying kindness, joy, and resilience. Benji's impact is seen in her infectious spirit and her ability to ensure that everyone feels supported, valued, and empowered to embrace physical activity. #LTLCollective #ladiesthatlunch #HiddenFigures #blackhistorymonth #bhm #unsungheroes #reclaimingnarratives
