Last night,I had the privilege of attending the Krewe Dinner honoring House Majority Leader Steve Scalise on behalf of Luminate at the beautiful World War II Museum. This was a great opportunity to strengthen our relationship, discuss the important role credit unions play in serving Louisiana communities, as well as and the importance of policies that support our growth. Leader Scalise has been a strong advocate for Main Street financial institutions, and we value his continued support. Hearing firsthand from Aurelio Arroyo, CEO at Cooperativa Jesús Obrero about the real-world impacts of cooperation among cooperatives is truly enlightening. The Cooperstiva was startes by a group of nuns 65 years ago to assist the poor families in their community. In Puerto Rico, the entire island is designated as a Persistent Poverty Area. The 91 Cooperativas on the island consistently collaborate to drive positive change in the underrepresented communities. Poverty is not a sudden occurrence, and reducing its impact will take time. However, the collective effort of individuals supporting each other showcases the potential for significant and lasting change. Luminate James C. Today was DAY UNO of exploring cooperatives in San Juan. One of my favorite takeaways today was seeing how financial cooperatives, and other cooperatives, have embedded themselves in the successful layers of the island’s ecosystem. Think about what happens when something vital is removed from an environment: there’s deterioration. How vital are our credit unions to the success of our members & communities?!? - ummm, YES!!!
