Unlocking the potential of communities to advance their own comprehensive wellbeing.
About us
We match community innovation with university-backed research and evaluation to drive significant improvements in health. Lwala is a community-led innovator and non-profit operating in rural Kenya. We were founded by a group of community members facing the dual crisis of HIV and maternal mortality, who organized to build their region’s first health clinic and then engaged the research prowess of Vanderbilt University to rigorously measure its interventions. Today, Lwala is much more than a hospital; it is a community-led health model making dramatic improvements in maternal and child health, including a 64% reduction in child mortality, a 98% facility delivery rate, and a 300% increase in contraceptive uptake. The success of Lwala’s community-led health model has driven us to reject the notion that grassroots health initiatives are not scalable. Indeed, these local interventions can transform systems of inequity by leveraging the latent capacity of vulnerable communities. Because of this, we believe bottom-up solutions are uniquely positioned for scale.

Today, Lwala met with COUNTY GOVERNMENT OF MIGORI and the Governor H.E Dr. Ochilo Ayacko to discuss how we can use our partnership to strengthen the continuity of primary health care services and sustainable health financing for the county. A key part of our engagement will be working together to boost enrollment for Kenya's public health insurance (SHA) by scaling partner outreaches and mobilizing community health workers.

Strengthening Maternal Health in Kisii County: A Milestone Partnership We were honoured to formalize a partnership between Lwala Community Alliance and Kisii County, with the unwavering support of Governor Simba Arati. His commitment to maternal health—backed by a promise to allocate budgetary resources—marks a crucial step toward saturating the county with EmONC services, mentorship, and NASG deployment. Led by our Co-CEO, Julius Mbeya , we signed an MOU alongside CEC Hon. Nyakweba, Chuef Officer Carren Orori, flanked by CHMT leaders, KTRH CEO, and sub-county health officials, reinforcing our shared goal: zero preventable maternal deaths. Drawing lessons from Makueni County, we urged Kisii to invest in maternal health governance balancing the supply and demand sides coupling this with the innovative Non-Pneumatic Anti-Shock Garments (NASG)—a game-changer in managing postpartum hemorrhage. Grateful to our incredible team for the event: Carren Siele (EmONC champion), Anne Kipsuto (clinical training lead), Alinda Ndenga RMNCH advisor, and Belindah Akoth Onyango our (comms lead)—your dedication fuels our mission. Let’s keep the conversation alive. No mother should die giving birth to life. No child should be lost at birth. Refuse to be desensitized. Change the narrative. #MaternalHealth #EmONC #PrimaryHealthCare #PartnershipsForImpact #HealthForAll #Kisii

This morning, Lwala Community Alliance joined the National MPDSR Steering Committee to discuss maternal and perinatal death surveillance and response (MPDSR) in Kenya. At the event, Dr. Bashir , Head of the Directorate of Family Health, emphasized the necessity for government investment in reproductive health, maternal, newborn, child, and adolescent health (RHMNCAH) to reduce maternal and perinatal mortality rates. Alindah Ndenga Lwala’s RMNCAH Advisor, shares a major highlight from the event–the launch of the 2024 MPDSR Guidelines. These guidelines will play a crucial role in guiding the implementation of audits and the monitoring process of audit and response, tracking the following data points: - Indicators for Monitoring the MPDSR System and Processes - Evaluation of the MPDSR System - Data Quality for MPDSR - Data Quality Review: Guidance for conducting data quality reviews at all levels. - Data Flow and Utilization: Understanding how data is managed and used across various levels of the healthcare system. - MPDSR Implementation Plan: A comprehensive strategy for executing the MPDSR guidelines effectively. These components will be critical for enhancing the effectiveness of the MPDSR system and ultimately improving maternal and perinatal health outcomes.
