We want to take a moment to thank Scott Colby for delivering such an inspiring presentation at #MAACMannual! Scott’s endnote session and gratitude walk were all about disconnecting from distractions to create meaningful connections, both personally and professionally. Through thoughtful exercises like pairing up with new people, reflecting on what and who we’re grateful for, and sharing our life stories, we were able to unplug and experience genuine connection—something that’s often missing in today’s fast-paced world. Thank you, Scott, for reminding us to slow down, unplug, and engage with those around us! #Gratitude #Connection #MAACMannual #Leadership #ScottColby #UnplugAndConnect

I had the wonderful opportunity to lead a gratitude walk and deliver the endnote at the Mid-Atlantic Association for Court Management (MAACM) annual meeting this week in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The goal of each of those were the same - to unplug and connect. During the gratitude walk, folks left their phones behind or at least turned them off so they wouldn't be a disturbance. We did a few things to enrich the experience of the walk. 1. People paired up with someone they didn't know. Each pair took a few minutes to find as many random things that they had in common with their partner. New bffs were created from this...at least that's what one pair said. :) 2. We took 3 minutes and walked in silence, thinking about what we're grateful for, and the good in our lives. The 3 minutes actually felt like a long time to me, and this was difficult to do for some. 3. Later on the walk, we paired up again, and reflected on someone in our lives that we're grateful for and why, and shared with our partners. 4. We did something called Grateful Speed Dating...I just made that name up because I don't know what else to call it. But we were in groups of 10, 5 lined up on one side, and 5 on the other side, facing the first 5. And we went through a few questions of The Grateful Deck...after one minute, we rotated, speed dating style (at least that's what I've heard - I've never been). For the endnote, it was all about creating moments of connection through having fun, expressing gratitude, and asking meaningful questions. Some of the things we did were... 1. Texting someone random on our phone contact list: "Hey, I just wanted to say thanks..." 2. We all put our phones in an envelope and put them under our chairs, because we can connect better when we disconnect. 3. We partnered up and played capture the finger to see who was better at sports. 4. We shared the best part of our week with our partner. 5. We took 60 seconds to share our life story with our partner. 6. We wrote down one word that describes how we're feeling about life right now, and thought about why we chose that word, and shared with our partner. 7. We played a few rounds of the Grateful Deck in a small group, so we could have some meaningful conversations. 8. We all wrote handwritten notes and a few people were brave enough to read their note. Sprinkled in between all of this, I weaved in some stories, talked about the growing connection crisis, which seems to be getting worse, and I gave away some cat toys and Grateful Decks. There were lots of moments of connection - lots of laughter, some tears, gratitude, fun, meaningful conversations, new friendships...and we were unplugged. This wasn't your typical endnote. My goal was to have people experience connection and inspire them to connect more at home and at work through fun, gratitude and asking questions. These are easy things that companies can do to build a better, more connected workplace. It's time to start now.
