We are changing the way the world treats women.
About us
WE ARE CHANGING THE WAY THE WORLD TREATS WOMEN. Women are different, right from the beginning. But until 1992, when we were founded, there wasn’t even a research institute dedicated to women’s issues. Today, Magee-Womens Research Institute is solving real world problems and impacting lives—in the fields of cancer, heart disease, fertility, HIV, Alzheimer’s and more. But the potential is boundless. Anything is possible when the country’s largest women’s research institute partners with a world-class women’s hospital.

Indigenous and Native American representation in STEM and aging research is essential for advancing diversity and inclusion in science. The National Institutes of Health/National Institute on Aging (NIA)-sponsored programs led by Dr. Gerald Schatten, Magee-Womens investigator, address this need by creating pathways for Native students from nations such as Comanche, Cherokee, Navajo, and Lumbee to pursue careers in research. The programs integrate culturally relevant approaches that provide students with hands-on experience in Alzheimer’s and aging research. Through daily lectures, advanced workshops, and mentorship, participants gain technical skills and explore biological, clinical, and behavioral dimensions of aging research. By fostering long-term mentorship, career development strategies, and opportunities for collaboration, these programs empower students to succeed in STEM while amplifying Indigenous perspectives in aging research. Did you know that Twin-to-Twin Transfusion Syndrome (TTTS) affects up to 15% of identical twin pregnancies sharing a placenta? TTTS is a rare, life-threatening condition where twins share blood vessels in the placenta, causing uneven blood flow; one baby gets too much, the other too little. For Kelly Finley, this rare diagnosis at 17 weeks shifted the course of her pregnancy journey. Thanks to a life-saving laser ablation performed by Dr. Stephen Emery at UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital, both twins survived. Today, Kelly is giving back to ensure other families have access to this critical care. Read more about her journey and how she's making a difference here: https://lnkd.in/eQZVU_Ut
