🚨 November 6, 2024, 9 AM: I received an alarming text from a close friend and neighbor: “What’s going on with the fire 🔥 ?” She was on a business trip, receiving alerts about a “small mountain fire” in the city next to us. That was how I first heard about the #MountainFire in Camarillo, CA. 🔥 By 1:40 PM, the fire had jumped to nearly 9,000 acres. 📱 My phone buzzed with emails, texts, and calls from anxious neighbors, concerned friends and family, and updates from my kids’ school. If you were on a call with me that day, I kept glancing out my office window to see if the wind and smoke were shifting. 🏫 Kids’ activities were canceled as teachers, coaches, and community leaders were issued evacuation orders at home. 🏃♂️ My husband and I checked our go bags and discussed exit plans. Kids were picked up from school and did homework as usual… …while families in the next town were losing their homes—some who had lived there for decades. 💔 Trying to put the kids to bed that night was hard. The fire had grown to 14,000 acres, was 0% contained, and phones buzzed with constant alerts. We woke to friends without power (a precaution from the utility company) and anxious kids. 💨 High winds on Wednesday and Thursday made it nearly impossible for firefighters to use air support to control the blaze. By Thursday afternoon, November 7, the fire had exploded to 20,500+ acres, destroyed 243 buildings (including many homes), and was now the 3rd most destructive wildfire in a decade in Southern California. 💔 Thursday evening, we got heartbreaking news: Our daughter’s teacher’s family and house were safe, but two of her close friends and neighbors lost everything. 💌 Room parents organized immediate support, encouraging donations like gift cards by Friday morning for families starting over from nearby hotels. By Saturday, the Girl Scouts of California's Central Coast coordinated efforts to help victims (humans and animals) and prepare others for future emergencies, even including emergency preparedness patches for scouts. ✨ Amazingly, despite the devastation, there were no fatalities and six injuries. 🕊️ But the hardest time is often in weeks 3 and 4—when initial support slows and the real work of rebuilding begins.
