Today is National Book Lovers Day, which is truly a day to celebrate, I think. Earlier this year, I was asked what memoir changed my life. Here's my answer: "I discovered Somerset Maugham’s memoir, 'The Summing Up,' after reading his wisdom-seeking novel 'The Razor’s Edge' while in college. Maugham pivoted many times in his life, from medical doctor, to novelist, to playwright. At one point, after seeing the title of an early play up on a theater marquee, he was struck by a beautiful sunset and gave thanks that he would never have to poetically describe a sunset again. "In becoming a playwright, he found solace in writing the dialogue of his theatrical characters instead of the uphill creative battle faced by all novelists. I, too, have made many such pivots, from early literary dreams, to a brush with the priesthood, to teaching philosophy, to business and organizational leadership. Like Maugham, I have never given up on exploring, living with and teaching the big ideas and truths of life. Only now I do them in a business context. A seeker never stops seeking.
