At Malasri Engineering, our vision is simple but impactful: to make everything work together to build more sustainable communities. We approach routine tasks with thoroughness and efficiency, and we tackle big problems with ingenuity and collaboration. This commitment is why we’re proud sponsors of Innovate Memphis’ City Hackathon. What is the City Hackathon? The City Hackathon is a 36-hour sprint event where volunteers with diverse technical and creative skills come together to develop innovative solutions to real-world civic challenges in Memphis. This year’s challenges, identified by city leaders, focus on three critical areas: 1. Blight & Neighborhood Improvement 2. Transportation for Workforce Development 3. AI & Smart City Technology With over 70 volunteers and nearly 15 teams working tirelessly through the weekend, the energy and collaboration have been inspiring. Memphis is a city full of potential, and this event showcases our community's innovative spirit and determination to tackle complex challenges head-on. Congratulations to the winning teams for their innovative ideas, and an even bigger thank you to all the volunteers, judges, and sponsors who made this event possible. • 🚧 Exciting News for Whitehaven! 🚧 The final large-scale project of the Accelerate Memphis initiative is about to begin construction in Whitehaven—marking a significant milestone for the city's revitalization efforts. As part of Accelerate Memphis, the initiative targets critical areas for transformative investments, focusing on high-frequency transit corridors. These investments, guided by comprehensive small-area plans, are designed to unlock greater public and private growth opportunities. In Whitehaven, the project will focus on improving key streets, including Raines Road, Finley Road, and Faronia Road, enhancing access to vital community amenities like Southwest Tennessee Community College: Whitehaven Center, Methodist South Hospital, and other community assets. Additionally, this effort aligns with another Accelerate Memphis streetscape improvements along Wesley Drive, which featured: -Two raised crosswalks with landscaping and pedestrian signalization -Relocation of existing speed bumps for safer traffic flow Street improvements will also improve the bus stops along these corridors, enhancing both the safety and accessibility of public transportation. Upgrades will include medians with street trees, pedestrian crossings, and traffic-calming measures designed to slow traffic, creating a safer environment for pedestrians and commuters. Additionally, sidewalks will be modernized to meet current ADA standards, ensuring greater accessibility for everyone. This project is vital to implementing the broader Memphis 3.0 vision, the city's comprehensive master plan. Other neighborhoods receiving large-scale investments as part of this initiative include Raleigh, South City, Soulsville, Hollywood Hyde Park, Klondike, Orange Mound, Highland Heights, and Oakhaven. Exciting times ahead for Whitehaven and all of Memphis as we continue to build a more connected, vibrant, and accessible city! • At Malasri Engineering, we work to solve big problems with ingenuity and collaboration. Andre of Jones Urban Development embodies this spirit in our community. What is missing middle housing? It refers to a range of multi-unit housing types—like duplexes, triplexes, and townhomes—that bridge the gap between single-family homes and large apartment buildings. This housing type is essential for creating diverse, inclusive neighborhoods that cater to various income levels and lifestyles. A challenge with our city is that many hardworking individuals and families struggle to find affordable, quality options that meet their needs. Andre is stepping up to create solutions that address this gap, focusing on building cottage courts that the working class can afford and designed to foster community and inclusivity in the Uptown neighborhood of Memphis. Check out his most recent feature on WREG News Channel 3 (starting at 19:20), where he shares insights on the importance of diverse housing options and how he is leading the charge in this crucial effort. https://lnkd.in/e8aRFeFn It’s inspiring to see local initiatives that align with the needs of our Memphis residents, especially in Uptown. Let’s support and celebrate these efforts toward a more inclusive housing future! 🏡✨ #MissingMiddleHousing #MemphisCommunity #LocalImpact #Collaboration #UptownMemphis #Memphis

  • 🚧 Project Spotlight: South City Intersection and Green Space Revitalization 🌳 Through Accelerate Memphis, the large-scale investment in South City is transforming the intersection at Mississippi Blvd. and East Georgia Ave., along with the creation of vibrant public green spaces. The goal? To make this area safer, more accessible, and welcoming for all Memphians. This project includes essential railroad underpass improvements, safety upgrades along Lauderdale St. and Mississippi Blvd., and even the integration of public art installations. These enhancements boost safety and mobility and establish visually distinctive gateways to South City's community landmarks. It has become her favorite project for Sarah Dowda, the project manager overseeing the construction. "I love that we’re transforming a dangerous intersection into an intersection that will now be safer for drivers and pedestrians alike. Transforming the underused space into something beautiful and inviting is an added benefit. This project’s artistic enhancements and green spaces bring real value to the community. It’s about more than just infrastructure… it’s creating a space where people can gather and take pride in their neighborhood." Key improvements like improved street crossings and curb extensions calm traffic and improve pedestrian safety, while new outdoor seating and a pedestrian plaza bring life to the streetscape. With upgraded lighting, bike lanes, and additional green spaces, the South City community will enjoy a safer intersection and a dynamic place to connect and celebrate. 🌟 Many thanks to all who made this project possible! • Have you ever walked or biked in your community and felt unsafe? It's a common concern, but thoughtful design can change that! Last month, we discussed design factors that contribute to creating safer, more livable streets, including slowing down cars, providing protected spaces, improving visibility, and optimizing traffic signals. Today, let's examine an early-stage site from Accelerate Memphis—Macon and A Street—that incorporates these principles. This project includes: 🔹 Curb Bump-Outs & Concrete Ramps: Safer crossings for pedestrians. 🔹 Street Trees: Shade and a buffer between pedestrians and traffic. 🔹 One-Way Conversion with Dedicated Bike Lane: Enhanced safety and traffic flow. 🔹 Signage Improvements: Clear, visible signs to guide pedestrians and cyclists. 🔹 Amenity Connections: A dedicated, safe route for cyclists and walkers to connect to amenities like the Shelby Farms Greenline and other nearby destinations. These elements work together to create a safer, more comfortable, and more connected environment for everyone. What other features of this project do you think contribute to creating safer streets? Share your thoughts below! Thanks to Memphis and Shelby County Division of Planning and DevelopmentKimley-Horn, Montgomery Martin Contractors, and Gresham Smith for making this project happen! #Memphis #AccelerateMemphis #activatingmemphis3point0 #SustainableCities #UrbanPlanning  #SaferStreets #LivableCommunities #DesignMatters
