Even in the face of tragedy, the beauty of humanity shines. The fires in Los Angeles that began last week have devastated and traumatized the city. Despite these hardships, community members have shown up for each other, demonstrating the power of compassion, community action, and the influence of yogic principles, like ahimsa, in all we do. Ahimsa, or active non-violence, involves holding compassion for all living beings (people and animals), acts of service, and selflessness. As the first of the five Yamas (principles of yoga), it reminds us that yoga exists everywhere. Whether we’re flowing through asanas or volunteering to get water and food supplies to those in need, we’re practicing yoga. We are in awe of the beautiful communal actions that have arisen from this disaster, inspired by the omnipresence of yoga in life, and proud to share this silver lining of hope.
