𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗡𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗙𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗰𝘆: 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗖𝗮𝗻 𝗛𝗮𝗿𝗺 𝗨𝘀 The narrative fallacy, a concept introduced by Nassim Nicholas Taleb, refers to people’s tendency to create linear and oversimplified stories to explain complex events. While narratives can provide meaning and structure, they can also lead to harmful physical and mental consequences, including suicidal thoughts. How our narratives can harm us: 1.   𝙊𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙞𝙢𝙥𝙡𝙞𝙛𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣: a.   Reducing complex events to a single narrative, that can lead to feelings of hopelessness. b.   Example: I can’t be an actor because I am not tall and muscular (but not considering acting skills and character requirements of the role) 2.   𝙇𝙤𝙨𝙨 𝙤𝙛 𝘼𝙜𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙮: a.   Believing that our story is predetermined, which erodes personal control. b.   Example: I’ll stay poor because I was born poor (but thinking about seeking opportunities, acquiring skills and changing bad influences) 3.   𝘾𝙖𝙩𝙖𝙩𝙧𝙤𝙥𝙝𝙞𝙯𝙞𝙣𝙜: a.   Focusing on worst-case scenarios that intensifies emotional pain. b.   Example: I know I’ll not clear the cutoff of the exam at all (but not considering focusing on strong subjects and strategically writing the exam) 4.   𝙉𝙚𝙜𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙚 𝙎𝙚𝙡𝙛 𝙎𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙮-𝙏𝙚𝙡𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙜: a.   Crafting a narrative that emphasizes worthlessness that leads to self-blame and low self-esteem. b.   Example: I couldn’t even solve this simple math problem (but not checking the calculation mistakes and errors in the question itself) 5.   𝙏𝙪𝙣𝙣𝙚𝙡 𝙑𝙞𝙨𝙞𝙤𝙣: a.   Becoming entrenched in a single narrative and becoming obscure to alternative perspectives and solutions. b.   Example: This political party is the best political party (but cot considering the merits of other parties and demerits of your preferred party) Breaking Free from Harmful Narratives: 1. 𝙎𝙚𝙚𝙠 𝙋𝙧𝙤𝙛𝙚𝙨𝙨𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙡 𝙃𝙚𝙡𝙥: Consult a mental health expert to challenge and reframe negative narratives. 2. 𝙁𝙤𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙧 𝙖 𝙎𝙪𝙥𝙥𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙚 𝘾𝙤𝙢𝙢𝙪𝙣𝙞𝙩𝙮: Surround yourself with people who offer diverse perspectives and encouragement. 3. 𝙋𝙧𝙖𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙘𝙚 𝙎𝙚𝙡𝙛-𝘾𝙤𝙢𝙥𝙖𝙨𝙨𝙞𝙤𝙣: Treat yourself with kindness and understanding. 4. 𝘿𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙡𝙤𝙥 𝙋𝙧𝙤𝙗𝙡𝙚𝙢-𝙎𝙤𝙡𝙫𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙎𝙠𝙞𝙡𝙡𝙨: Learn to approach challenges with a growth mindset. 5. 𝙍𝙚𝙬𝙧𝙞𝙩𝙚 𝙔𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙎𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙮: Create a new narrative that emphasizes hope, resilience, and personal growth. Conclusion: The narrative fallacy can have devastating consequences, but by recognizing its influence and actively working to reframe our stories, we can break free from harmful narratives and cultivate a more hopeful, resilient mindset. #suicideprevention #worldsuicidepreventionday #mentalhealth #psychology #manodishamentalhealthservices

  • Often we forget that our kids are a mirror of us. What we do, they do copy; how we behave it creates a lot of impact on them.. How we react on things, creates a long lasting impression, which not only affects their personality and how they deal with their surroundings but also their life is impacted by it. Make sure you use appropriate sentences and make them learn healthy behaviours. 🍃Doomscrolling and its effects🍃 It is getting very common among us when we just feel that we want to stay informed about what is going on in the world, but what we are consuming is negative news. When we do it for a few times, slowly it becomes our habit, which eventually locks us into a loop of feeling bad. It can be really harmful, when compared to the rates of depression and anxiety in the present times. It may worsen mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, feelings of fear, sadness and sometimes this much level of negativity leads into a panic attack. How to STOP doomscrolling: •Notice how you are feeling- Be mindful about your feelings and emotions •AVOID Catastrophizing i.e., jumping straight to worst-case Scenario •Check your phone consciously, not compulsively •Slow your Scroll •Set time limits while using social media •Focus on the NOW •Seek out positive news, too •Practice Gratitude •Take a BREAK from social media •Perform mindful movements by practising yoga, or a simple walk #psychology #mentalhealth #manodisha #knowledge #wellbeing
