The African Wildlife Foundation recently had the privilege of showcasing our transformative conservation success at Manyara Ranch during the 2nd National Annual Wildlife Corridors Forum in Arusha, Tanzania. This vital platform brought together stakeholders to validate wildlife connectivity guidelines, discuss policy innovations, and share lessons on overcoming connectivity challenges. In collaboration with Manyara Ranch Conservancy, AWF presented a compelling case for scaling up proven conservation practices. Over two decades, AWF has restored Manyara Ranch from a degraded cattle farm to a thriving wildlife migratory route between Tarangire National Park and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. This innovative conservation model has achieved remarkable milestones: zero elephant poaching since 2015, restored ecological balance in the Maasai Steppe, and improved community livelihoods through sustainable livestock management. By addressing policies on benefit-sharing and land use planning, AWF’s efforts underscore the importance of inclusive, community-driven conservation for wildlife connectivity. The forum also provided a platform for impactful engagement with leaders like Hon. Dunstan Kitandula, Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Tourism, who visited AWF’s exhibition stall to learn about our work at Manyara Ranch Conservancy. As we continue championing the connection of landscapes and communities, we remain committed to scaling transformative solutions that promote coexistence, ensure ecosystem health, and safeguard Africa’s iconic wildlife for future generations. 🎥 SPOTLIGHT CLIP: Dramatic changes in recent years have gravely impacted 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚. The spread of human settlements and agriculture have blocked age-old wildlife migration routes, leading to more frequent and sometimes deadly confrontations between people and #animals. 🦒 🦓 Specifically, in the Manyara Ranch region, there’s been a vital need to protect #wildlife corridors to preserve 𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐦𝐢𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐞𝐬 for lions 🦁, elephants 🐘, wildebeests, and other keystone species. The need has also presented a unique 𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐜 𝐨𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 for people in nearby villages who operate farms and large herds of livestock. 🐄 🐐 𝘼𝙙𝙫𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙚𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙨 is spotlighting African Wildlife Foundation (AWF), an #Africa-based global conservation organization protecting wildlife and their habitats across the continent, while also focusing on solutions that create opportunities for residents. AWF has developed unique #conservation models, helping livestock and wildlife thrive side-by-side, and improving the livelihoods of those that live in the Manyara Ranch region in Tanzania. The multi-use, community-led Manyara Ranch Conservancy is now a sanctuary for a diverse range of animals. “𝙈𝙖𝙣𝙮𝙖𝙧𝙖 𝙍𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙝 𝙞𝙨 𝙠𝙚𝙮 𝙞𝙣 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙩𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙬𝙞𝙡𝙙𝙡𝙞𝙛𝙚 𝙢𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙗𝙚𝙩𝙬𝙚𝙚𝙣 𝙩𝙬𝙤 𝙣𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙡 𝙥𝙖𝙧𝙠𝙨, 𝙏𝙖𝙧𝙖𝙣𝙜𝙞𝙧𝙚 𝙉𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙡 𝙋𝙖𝙧𝙠 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙉𝙜𝙤𝙧𝙤𝙣𝙜𝙤𝙧𝙤 𝘾𝙤𝙣𝙨𝙚𝙧𝙫𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝘼𝙧𝙚𝙖. As highlighted in the Tanzanian Times, the official handover of Manyara Ranch Conservancy marked a significant milestone in our commitment to sustainable conservation and community empowerment. This transition not only underscores the importance of local stewardship but also aligns with our vision of #Africanled #conservation initiatives. Sea & Bush's investment of TZS 53 billion in the region signals a bright future for community-driven #economicdevelopment and #environmentalsustainability. It is a testament to the collaborative efforts required to protect our natural heritage while fostering economic growth. At the African Wildlife Foundation, we believe in the power of community engagement and the critical role that local leaders play in conservation. This handover is more than a transfer of land; it’s a transfer of trust and responsibility to those who live closest to the wildlife and landscapes we strive to protect. We're thrilled to announce that the African Wildlife Foundation has successfully handed over Manyara Ranch Conservancy to the Manyara Ranch Management Trust after two decades of dedicated #conservation and community development efforts in #NorthernTanzania. Since 2013, AWF has transformed Manyara Ranch into a thriving wildlife habitat situated between Tarangire and Lake Manyara National Parks. This incredible journey has ensured that local communities and wildlife, including giraffes, lions, and elephants, coexist sustainably. Our innovative conservation model has achieved significant results, including achieving zero elephant poaching since 2015 and maintaining the ecological balance of the Maasai Steppe. The Ranch is now a crucial corridor for migrating wildlife, showing that conservation and community development can go hand in hand. Importantly, we've invested significantly in local education by renovating Manyara Ranch primary school, which now provides a safe and enhanced learning environment for over 1,000 students. To ensure that Manyara Ranch continues to thrive, the Manyara Ranch Management Trust has signed a tourism development agreement with Sea and Bush Limited. This exciting investment is set to boost local employment by 65% and increase tourism and livestock revenue by 70%.
