As part of my coursework, I have been studying the history of American education in the pre-colonial and early colonial eras; most notably the influence of European influence on Native American education. Without getting too far into the details, I think that there are three points worth considering that apply to education today: 1. Education is best when the community comes together to take responsibility (not accountability) for learning. 2. Subjects should not be chosen merely on the basis of what provides the greatest perceived social status (*cough* calculus *cough*), but should be tied to what is necessary to be respectful members of a productive society. 3. Using education to force values upon students is risky. Education is a great platform to introduce students to information and think critically to make smart and informed decisions through critical thinking.
