On behalf of the entire Mariposa community, we are proud to stand with our sisters Girls Not Brides: The Global Partnership to End Child Marriage in Colombia and to celebrate this incredible milestone for all of the Americas. We applaud you and all of the tremendous efforts to end child marriage everywhere. ¡Seguimos adelante!
#SonNiñasNoEsposas 🙌The Colombian Congress has just passed one of the most comprehensive bills in Latin America and the Caribbean to end child marriage and early unions (CMEU)! This landmark legislation raises the minimum age to 18, without exception, and establishes a National Comprehensive Programme for Life Projects for Children and Adolescents focused on prevention and protection. With child marriage rates in Colombia stagnant at 23% over the past 25 years, this law brings much-needed change! However, it’s only the beginning. We call on the Colombian government to ensure effective implementation and funding, and prioritise: 1️⃣ Strengthening legal frameworks and public servant training for CMEU law enforcement. 2️⃣ Investing in child protection and access to health, education, and justice. 3️⃣ Addressing socioeconomic and gender inequalities that drive CMEU. 4️⃣ Raising awareness and promoting legal literacy. 5️⃣ Involving children and adolescents in policy decisions impacting their lives. #EndChildMarriage #Colombia #LegalReform #Law

With the support of our renewed partnership with Prospera Latina, the Mariposa girls are experiencing more professional opportunities than ever! Over the past few years, Mariposa has created and fine-tuned our signature Navigating Her Future program which aims to educate girls on the academic and economic options available to them. As part of the Navigating Her Future program, Mariposa girls embark on field trips and have conversations with guest speakers to learn about the variety of job industries that exist for them. Speaking with female hotel owners, doctors, chefs, etc., encourages the Mariposa girls to dream bigger than they thought possible. We cannot wait to see how these Mariposas dream bigger and bigger as their success continues.
