The pre-commissioning test was conducted with CheckWatt’s hardware unit CM10 and has confirmed that MARS’s BESS solution meets all the performance requirements for delivery of ancillary services in the Nordic market. Martian Post 📬015: Wind Power Leads in Sweden, But So Does Electricity Price Volatility—BESS Holds the Solution Sweden is facing increasing electricity market volatility and negative pricing due to the growing integration of variable renewable energy sources, particularly wind and solar. In December 2024, wind energy became the largest source of electricity for the first time, accounting for 35% of total production, according to the Swedish Wind Energy Association (SWEA). Additionally, Sweden added 1 GW of solar in 2024, bringing the total installed solar capacity to over 5GW. 🧐 Challenges of Renewables: While these renewables are essential to Sweden’s energy transition, their intermittent nature leads to unpredictable electricity production, causing price fluctuations in short-term markets. These fluctuations include negative prices, particularly in hours with high renewable output, such as in SE4, where negative prices occurred 137 hours by mid-2024 reported by Montel. Battery Balancing: Optimizing Performance and Efficiency in Energy Storage Systems – Martian Post 📬014 Battery balancing is a critical technique in battery management that ensures each pack within a battery rack maintains a healthy state of charge (SoC) and achieves optimized performance. The process is vital for enhancing the longevity, efficiency, and reliability of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). 🧐What Causes Battery Cell Imbalance? Cell imbalance arises when individual cells within a pack exhibits slightly variations in voltage, capacity, or state of charge (SoC). These differences are common due to manufacturing variations and uneven usage patterns. Once the weakest pack in the battery rack is depleted, the whole rack stops delivering energy, despite other pack potentially retaining unused capacity. This phenomenon is known as the“barrel effect.” ⚔️ Balancing Techniques: Active vs. Passive Active balancing redistributes charge from high SoC battery packs to low SoC battery packs. Passive balancing achieves similar SoC by simply dissipating excess charge through bleed resistors. Both active and passive balancing are effective ways to improve system health by monitoring and matching SoC of battery. 🔋MARS’s Approach to Optimizing BESS Performance Mars Renewable has optimized the economic performance of its BESS by leveraging advanced string management and rack-level charge-discharge management technologies. By optimizing energy flow within individual strings and managing charge-discharge operations independently at the rack level, MARS ensures that weaker cells or modules do not constrain the overall system performance. Electricity Price Spikes in Europe Highlight the Need for More BESS – Martian Post📬013 Last week, electricity prices across the main European markets continued to rise, with Germany experiencing a particularly sharp spike, reaching levels not seen since the 2022 energy crisis. According to Bloomberg, wholesale prices in intraday trading soared to nearly 1,000 euros per megawatt hour on December 12, more than ten times the average price throughout the rest of the year. This sharp increase posed challenges for some energy-intensive industrial power consumers. 🧐How does it happen? Germany and other parts of Europe recently experienced a “Dunkelflaute”, a period when wind and solar energy production dropped significantly due to a lack of wind and sunlight. The German Economy Ministry (BMWK) reported that the average output of wind power at 3.1 gigawatts (GW) has been nearly 85 percent lower than the 19.2 GW usually seen during this time of the year. 💡How can we address it?
