  • Last week, a group led by the Maryland Clean Energy Center journeyed to Vermont to explore cutting-edge biomass heating systems. We toured innovative facilities that use advanced wood heating technology to reduce carbon emissions, lower costs, boost local economies, and enhance forest health. Vermont's success in integrating biomass into its energy mix offers valuable insights for Maryland, as both states share common goals of advancing green energy and conservation. Vermont has built a thriving sub-sector of the forest products industry focused on producing and delivering sustainable wood fuel. Fun Facts: 🌳 Did you know that when you heat with fossil fuels, 78 cents of every dollar leaves the region? But when you heat with locally sourced wood, the opposite happens, helping to retain wealth locally, create jobs, and preserve our forests. In Vermont: 🍂 1 in 3 schools is heated with wood. 🍂 More than 38% of homes are partly or entirely heated by wood. 🍂 Wood provides 24% of Vermont's thermal energy. What’s holding Maryland back? Wood heating is a win-win for both the environment and the economy—it’s time we follow Vermont’s lead! #MarylandForests #ForestsForever Rural Maryland Council Maryland Clean Energy Center Maryland Department of Natural Resources Kingdom Trails #localeconomy #thermalenergy #greenjobs Eastern Shore Land Conservancy #WoodEnergy #WoodyBiomass #GreenJobs #forestproud

  • Edrich Lumber Inc. needs your help filling trucks with animal feed to be sent to parts of North Carolina devasted by Hurricane Helene. Farmers in North Carolina are in dire need of animal feed. We are using our facility here at Edrich Lumber to gather and assemble animal feed donations for the farmers of North Carolina. What you need to know about farmers is that if their animals don't eat, neither do they. It is a crucial time for our friends to face. Since we started this mission today, 10/8/24, around 1 p.m., we have almost filled our first tractor-trailer. We will continue sending trucks as we fill them. Your donation will make a significant difference to these farmers, no matter how big or small. Please consider purchasing animal feed and bringing it to our facility during our business hours. We will ensure your donation reaches the North Carolina farmers in need. Please let us know if you have a large quantity of feed to donate. We can set up the pickup of your pallets or bales of hay. We can also pick that up in our walking floor trailers if you have bulk feed. With your help, we can support our friends and neighbors in need. Please let your local feed store, farm, or grocery store know how they can help. We will deliver to North Carolina on our trucks as we fill them. Please let them know we will pick up their donations. We will take calls and texts during business hours to help arrange donations and pickups. 410-922-5959. Your deliveries here help our resources go further. As we approach departing on Friday with our first truck, we will post where our trucks are heading. Please spread the word. We at Edrich truly appreciate your help in keeping our farms and farmers alive. 410-922-5959 Call or text 7:30-4:30 Monday thru Friday 7:30-12 Saturday Our first truck is full, and we are deeply grateful for your support. Let's keep the momentum going. Thank you for your generosity. Another great way to donate is to buy bales of hay from your local farm, and we will pick them up. This is a win for Maryland and North Carolina farms. Just text or call us to let us know where to go. • Last night’s Logger Appreciation Dinner was full of great people from two states that support the forest industry, fantastic food, and awesome music. We celebrated Arthur Egolf as MD-DE Logger of the Year, raised funds for causes that specifically benefit loggers, gave a surprise MD State Forester’s Commendation to Phil MacDonald for his diligent response to reporting Diplodia- a concerning fungal outbreak affecting loblolly pines, and just had a great time socializing with our peers. Beth Hill, Executive Director of the Maryland Forests Association, joined the ALC as an Associate Organization Member a few years ago. She advocates for proactive forest management to ensure sustainability, highlighting that Maryland's loggers face strict regulations and misconceptions about logging. Beth aims to improve Maryland's public understanding of logging's vital role in supporting wildlife habitats, enhancing forest health, and providing essential resources. #americanloggers #strongertogether #forestmanagement #saveamericanforests #saveourloggers

Our Executive Director, Elizabeth Hill, is always saying that if you live, work, or play in the forest you should be a member of MFA. This past weekend one of our supporters was spotted on the #appalachiantrail. Outdoor adventures in a #heathyforest are great for the mind, body, and soul. Where will your next outing be? Into the woods we go! This week we assisted the LEAD Maryland Foundation with a day and half dedicated to teaching future leaders about the forestry sector in the state. 🌳Class 13 is an amazing group that was fully engaged as we attended the Mountain Loggers meeting where they learned how loggers give back to the community. 🌳They also learned about the forest supply chain and the challenges and opportunities currently facing the sector. 🌳They learned about forest management and stocking with a hands-on exercise where they were able to take a plot to determine trees per acre and basal area. 🌳They heard about tree planting, forest pests, wood for green energy, forest health, and management plans. 🌳They got to witness trees being harvested and maple sugar being made. Our forests provide so many benefits both for the environment and the economy, we thank all of our forestry friends for helping drive that message home! #marylandforests #forestsforever

  • Today we hosted a “forestry tour” for the MALPF Board of Trustees. We were blessed with terrific weather and amazing participants! 🌳We visited a recent select harvest on an easement protected property and learned about how working forests contribute to working farms. 🌳We visited a sawmill and learned how all mills in Maryland are small family owned businesses often spanning generations that have a personal connection to the land and the community. 🌳We visited a recently installed advanced wood heating system at a state park and learned how wood can help meet Maryland’s green energy goals with sustainable forest management. Thanks to our knowledgeable speakers- the Rhodes family, Davis & Associates, ESLC, Hardwood Mills, Paul Jones Lumber, and MD DNR the tour was a success! #marylandforests #forestsforever
