In 2024, only months before the world lost Dr. Nick Hopkins, our host John Murray, sat down with Dr. Hopkins to discuss his innovative treatments in #StrokeCare, the necessity of collaboration & partnerships to advance research & #ClinicalCare, & the importance of mentorship & training the next generation of #neurosurgeons. In this special memorial episode, we hear Dr. Hopkins reflect on “not doing everything by the book, but looking around to ask: is there a better way than what’s in the book?” He shares his philosophy on embracing & learning from mistakes that have fueled advancements in #neurovascular methodologies & inspired a culture of openness in the medical community. The episode also delves into the ethical & moral compass that underlies Dr. Hopkins’ work, reaffirming the profound humanity that anchors his approach to both his profession & personal life. To honor the depth of Dr. Hopkins’ legacy, we hear directly from many of his mentees & fellows. Thank you to Zeus for sponsoring this episode of #NeuroInnovationTalks. It may be a long holiday weekend, but first, some big news out of Johnson & Johnson — the company has resumed sales of its Varipulse pulsed field ablation system after temporarily pausing commercial activity for the technology in the U.S. last month. The company paused sales to investigate the root of reported neurovascular events related to the use of the system. However, the investigation “found the devices operate as intended.” Read more about it at MassDevice: https://lnkd.in/eRf6K5hR #medtech #medicaldevices #catheters #pulsedfieldablation #PFA #stroke #neurovascular #AFib

Dr. Frederic Moll clearly had a vision 30 years ago when he founded Intuitive. So it's worth asking what he see as the companies/surgical areas worth watching today. Or, we can just see where he's investing his time and capital. 👓 MassDevice yesterday reported that he joined the board of ForSight Robotics, which is working in the #ophthalmology space. (Any articles are in the comments.) Other recent board appointments reported on MassDevice: 2024 🫀 Surgical robotics veteran Dr. Fred Moll joins SS Innovations’ board - SS Innovations has built an impressive surgical system that could compete with Intuitive, especially as it moves into #cardiac surgery. (BTW, they'll be presenting on our virtual #surgicalrobotics series in April.) 2023 🌕 Moon Surgical raises $55.4M to support surgical robot platform, names Fred Moll board chair - Moon is selling Maestro, a simple but complex surgical system built to assist in laparoscopic surgeries. 🤖 Neptune Medical brings on Intuitive co-founder as its board chair - Chris Newmarker writes that Neptune is developing "a fully flexible medical robot to enable doctors to reach deep into human anatomy. " No doubt there are more. For example, he's served on the board at PROCEPT BioRobotics since 2011. 🌊 PROCEPT is a publicly traded, commercial-stage maker of a image guided surgical robotics system using heat-free waterjet ablation to treat urological conditions. 👏 He's also on boards of at least one non-robotic entity - RefleXion Medical, which advancing cancer treatment. If you want to see investments, you can Google "Fred Moll Investment Portfolio" and get a fairly compreshensive glimpse on PitchBook. Dr. Moll invests as an angel but also a partner at Sonder Capital. The profile write up seems a bit dated, but it offers a long list of companies including late 2024 investments in Mendaera, Inc., Moon Surgical and Neocis/Yomi . ❓ I'm still a little unclear on what Mendaera is focused on, but it did acquire the telesurgery technology from Avail Medsystems last year. 🦷 Neocis/Yomi is in the dental space, which is definitely a growing area with promises of automation and private pay.. As for as exits, he's had some great ones. For example, I didn't know that Dr. Moll was an investor in Gauss, the AI-powered company acquired by Stryker in 2021. Of course, he also sold Auris Health, Inc. to J&J. So there you go. Intuitive alone would have been enough for many careers, but Dr. Moll presses forward. It's hard to think a single person who has had a greater impact on #MedTech over the past 30 years. There are others, to be sure, but Dr. Moll is high up on the list. 👊

Me, cooking something up for MassDevice and #medtech insiders for the last three weeks: IYKYK! All I have to say is... the #surgicalrobotics industry is booming. I’ll be plating up bite-sized insights until the full project drops at the end of the month. Yes, chef!

Intuitive co-founder Dr. Fred Moll is staying busy: It's hard to keep track of all the young #surgicalrobotics companies where he has a board seat. The latest is ForSight Robotics, which looks to advance its ophthalmology-focused surgical robot. Go to MassDevice to find out more. (Link in the comments.) #roboticsurgery #medtech #meddevice
