The free-to-attend event dedicated to the UK concrete industry takes place from 26-27 February at the NEC Birmingham. As part of the session 'Sustainable concrete solutions for a greener tomorrow' Jordan will present the case study 'Low Clinker Concrete Solutions: Unveil the power of MasterCO2re which simplifies low-clinker concrete production'. Concrete production accounts for about 8% of man-made CO2 emissions worldwide, of which up to 90% is due to cement clinker production. Substituting clinker contained in cement and ultimately in concrete with alternative materials such as limestone filler or supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) can save considerable amounts of carbon emissions. However, these more sustainable materials do not come without their own challenges and influence the concrete properties: Loss in workability, worsening of rheology, and the reduction of strength. Wie reagieren Zement und Opalinuston miteinander? Spannende Einblicke aus dem Felslabor Mont Terri! Seit 2007 läuft das CI-Experiment (Cement-Clay Interaction) im Felslabor Mont Terri Project, um diese Frage zu beantworten. Verschiedene Zementtypen interagieren hier unter realistischen Bedingungen langfristig mit Opalinuston – ein zentrales Thema für die Sicherheit des geplanten Tiefenlagers. Im letzten Jahr wurde im Rahmen des Experiments ein innovativer Ringspaltmörtel in ein Bohrloch gefüllt. Dieses Material, gemeinsam entwickelt von der Nagra und Master Builders Solutions, könnte zukünftig beim Bau des Tiefenlagers eingesetzt werden. Es dient dazu, die Hohlräume zwischen Tunnelwand und den Befestigungselementen aus Zement – den sogenannten Tübbingen – zu verschliessen. Warum ist das wichtig? Die Porenwässer von Opalinuston und Zement haben unterschiedliche pH-Werte. Bei ihrer Interaktion können chemische Prozesse eine Grenzschicht mit geringerer Durchlässigkeit erzeugen. Diese potenziellen Effekte untersucht das CI-Experiment unter realitätsnahen Bedingungen. Ziel ist es, zu bestätigen, dass solche chemischen Störungen nur im Millimeterbereich auftreten, wie es Modelle vorhersagen.
