Upcycling vegetable surplus into healthy foodservice and retail pro to advance the health of people and the environment
About us
We innovate to address the crises of food waste and hunger by producing tasty, inexpensive food products from surplus and fresh-cut remnants. We bridge gaps in local food systems by using misshapen, yet still-nutritious, rejected, landfill-bound vegetables. We transform systems by reimagining logistics, changing consumer demand, and encouraging enthusiasm for variety.

I am always stunned by the simplicity of certain solutions to public health: like the introduction of handwashing by Ignaz Semmelweis in the mid-1800s that saved millions of women's lives (previously, doctors would go from conducting autopsies to women in childbirth without disinfecting their hands!), or Richard Cash's (obit today) introduction of hydration with clean water, salt and sugar, that has saved millions and millions of children from the ravages of cholera. And it just brings home that every crisis has straightforward solutions that are right in front of us, that can have massive positive effect if implemented. Of course I have to turn to climate and food insecurity as two of the most urgent issues facing the world today. We know that #wastedfood is one of the most #solvable issues that everyone can participate in mitigating. We know that beef production and consumption create dire environmental and health impacts. We know that eating plants is better for soil, human health, and global food insecurity. And there's no one person who needs to be lauded for any of this because it's all of us, #together, through #collectiveaction, eradicating waste in our lives and our businesses that can get us to a healthier planet and people. #Reducewaste. #Eatmoreplants #buyUpcycled #compost. This isn't tech, it's common sense. #savelives #savetheplanet. We know how. Let's do it. Faster. Truly all lives depend on it. ReFED Upcycled Food Association Where Food Comes From, Inc.Planet FWD

Made to Sustain did a great job with this interview, digging in to some of the harder questions about supply chains and packaging and food safety and compliance in addition to all the "Luck [that] happens when preparation meets opportunity" and the amazing people who took risks with Matriark Foods early on because they saw an opportunity and were willing to be curious and experiment with us. We talk about #foodinsecurity and the urgent need to #solvefoodloss and waste, which is also #nutritionloss and waste and what Matriark is doing to address this through our new products. "Adaptation and innovation will transform the global food supply." "We need a bundle of innovations and interventions." So, let's start with USING WHAT WE HAVE in better ways. #stopfoodwaste. Invest in startups that are innovating to #feedpeoplenotlandfills. Be a #consciousconsumer (read your labels, understand how your food travels). Don't forget that every single person can make a difference, that all efforts in aggregate, like voting, can change things.

I was thrilled to be on stage at the Specialty Food Association with Food Tank's inimitable Danielle Nierenberg, Pulitzer Prize-winning The New York Times journalist Kim Severson, the OG Niman Ranch hog farmer Paul Willis—discussing innovation, authenticity, animal welfare, upcycling at scale, and what it takes to drive change. And celebrating the leadership awards that both Paul and I were honored to receive. If you want some pith and some pointers, give it a watch. https://lnkd.in/gPiiCYPM
