HISTORIC RECORD BREAKING ACTIVITY! All-time total traveler record of over 1 million total passengers in a calendar year. This accomplishment reflects the airport’s continued record-breaking growth and enhanced domestic and international connectivity. Earlier this year, McAllen International Airport saw a 25% increase in year-over-year traffic and was granted $7.4 million in federal funding to improve and expand the airport. In addition to providing a premium and comfortable travel experience for those seeking leisure or business travel, all six MFE airlines take passengers to premiere destinations and major airport hubs to travel anywhere in the world. Thank you, Jason Altmire, DBA, for having Josh Vasquez, Director of Workforce Development on your podcast to discuss the pressing issues affecting McAllen. It was a great opportunity to delve into how new gainful employment regulations could exacerbate shortages in healthcare support occupations in our community. McAllen faces significant healthcare challenges, particularly in healthcare support occupations. The new income threshold test could be devastating to learners in states with significant regional wage gaps, especially in regions like McAllen, where wages and the cost of living are much lower than in the state’s other metropolitan areas. In the Austin area, hourly workers earn around $33 per hour. In the McAllen region, however, the average hourly wage is about $21. McAllen’s population and workforce are growing rapidly, with healthcare as a critical industry. Between 2012 and 2022, the McAllen Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) experienced a 10 percent increase in population and a 23 percent increase in jobs. Growth over the next decade will require the healthcare industry to expand by another 28.3 percent to meet our region’s healthcare needs. The McAllen Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) has a strategic workforce development plan aimed at addressing these challenges. The plan focuses on: Increasing access to education and training programs, particularly for women, minority students, individuals with disabilities, and veterans, to build a skilled workforce that can meet the healthcare needs of our community. Aligning education with workforce needs to ensure that training programs are relevant and effective. Increasing internship and apprenticeship opportunities to provide hands-on experience and facilitate the transition from education to employment. With these regulations potentially limiting access to essential workforce training, the impact on our local healthcare system could be significant. I appreciate the platform to share these insights and look forward to continuing the conversation on how we can address these challenges. Listen here: https://lnkd.in/dDMtVVB8

Last week, we had the privilege of celebrating the culmination of a semester-long collaboration between the UTRGV - The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Entrepreneurial Marketing and Finance students, the McAllen Economic Development Corporation , and business partners from Mexico, representing Reynosa, Monterrey, Guadalajara, and Puerto Vallarta.🥳 At McAllen EDC, fostering community engagement to bridge education with industry is one of our top priorities. This initiative exemplifies that mission, as The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Entrepreneurial Marketing and Finance students developed innovative marketing and financial plans for four Mexican firms aspiring to expand into the U.S. market. A heartfelt thank you to UTRGV's Robert C. Vackar College of Business and Entrepreneurship, Professor Eloy Garza, Marketing Professor, and Dr. Ahmed Elnahas, Associate Professor of Finance. Special recognition goes to our inspiring business leaders from Asanitas, Goltee, Los Chatos, Momole, La Maizeria, and La Artesanal for their vision and drive.
