After working corporately for 25+ years, I decided that I just wasn't having fun anymore. Then, after struggling through my own menopause journey, I just got mad about the disservice done to women during this stage of life! I made a major career pivot to embrace my purpose and focus on advocating for women’s health and serving women during menopause. And Menowar was born! • 🚺 Closing the Gender Gap in Healthcare This fantastic report by Cure. highlights many systemic challenges leading to a #GenderGap in healthcare. Here’s a quick summary of this comprehensive document.   🚨The Problem #WomensHealth faces systemic challenges rooted in: · Historical Exclusion: Women have been underrepresented in clinical trials, leaving significant gaps in data, and understanding of sex-linked differences in health outcomes. · Funding Disparities: Despite the $41.2 billion in venture funding in 2023, only 2% was directed toward women’s health. · Market Gap: Difficulty quantifying the market opportunity further stalls progress and innovation.   ⚠️The Result While women live longer than men on average, they spend 25% more of their lives in poor health. This leads to a lower quality of life, reduced workforce productivity, and higher healthcare costs for women compared to men.   💡 The Opportunity By driving innovation, investment, and impact, there is an opportunity to revolutionize women’s health and reduce disparities.   🚀How to Overcome: 1. Education & Awareness: Increase focus on sex-based biological differences in medical schools and academic research. 2. Data & Research: Expand research, not just in traditional women’s health issues, but across neurology, oncology, cardiovascular, autoimmune, and infectious diseases. 3. Compelling Investment Cases: Develop data-driven cases for investment, backed by scientific, medical, and commercial insights. 4. Support Entrepreneurs: Foster innovation by providing seed funding, education, networking, and mentorship to founders in women’s health. 5. Government Incentives: Offer non-dilutive funding and incentives for drugs, devices, and solutions that advance women’s health.   ✨The Benefits: Recognizing and addressing these opportunities could transform outcomes for women globally. Women’s health represents a  $50 billion market opportunity in 2024, projected to grow to $68 billion by 2030. ▶️It’s time to invest in innovation and close the gender gap in healthcare. Together, we can improve lives and create meaningful economic impact. https://lnkd.in/eiHqN8Yk #WomensHealth #Innovation #HealthcareInvestment #GenderEquity

🛑 Spotting Menopause Misinformation: A Quick Guide 🛑 Menopause conversations are on the rise, but so is misinformation. Dr. Nanette Santoro, a leading ob-gyn, shares 6 rules to help you separate facts from fiction and protect your health: 1. Beware of Unrealistic Promises: If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Menopause treatments come with benefits and risks—there’s no one-size-fits-all solution. 2. Check the Source: Look into who’s giving advice or selling a product. Are they a licensed medical professional, or do they profit from what they promote? Red flags include claims to “know better” than your doctor. 3. Spot Marketing Hype: Buzzwords like “hormone balance” or “clinically tested” can be misleading. Dig deeper before trusting the label. 4. Research Matters: Look for studies that involve real humans, randomization, and placebo controls. Trust clinical guidelines from reputable women’s health organizations. 5. Supplements Can Be Tricky: Dietary supplements for menopause aren’t FDA-regulated. Quality and safety can vary widely, so consult your doctor before trying them and use a reputable brand with 3rd party testing. 6. Question Compounded Hormones: Stick with FDA-approved treatments if possible. Compounded bioidentical hormones lack regulation, making them less reliable. In addition, they are often not covered by insurance. 💡 Pro Tip: Look for certified menopause experts (MSCP) for trusted advice. Your health deserves evidence-based care—not empty promises. https://lnkd.in/grwRuauZ #MenopauseAwareness #HealthTips #EmpoweredChoices

😲 You Had a Hysterectomy. What Did the Doctor Leave Behind? Shockingly, following a hysterectomy, many women are unclear about which organs are removed—especially the ovaries, which play a vital role in overall health. This article emphasizes the importance of being informed before undergoing this surgical procedure. 🔽The Low-Down on Hysterectomies · Hysterectomies are the 2nd most common surgery for women in the US, after C-sections, with about 500,000 performed each year.  · 41.8% of women aged 75 and older have had a hysterectomy. 🕰️Hysterectomy History · Doctors once routinely removed ovaries during hysterectomies to prevent ovarian cancer, though it’s very rare. · Now, surgeons often remove fallopian tubes instead, where most ovarian cancer originates. · Hysterectomies are steadily declining, thanks to new treatments for fibroids and pelvic pain. ⚖️Types · Total hysterectomy: Removes the uterus and cervix, leaving the ovaries. · Partial hysterectomy: Leaves the cervix in place. · Radical hysterectomy: Removes the uterus, cervix, surrounding tissue, and sometimes the upper part of the v*gina. ⚠️Why It Matters · Removing ovaries can shorten lifespan and increase risks for heart disease, osteoporosis, stroke, lung cancer, Parkinson’s, and dementia. · Losing ovaries before menopause can trigger sudden, severe symptoms of early menopause. 🩺 What to Ask Your Doctor · What type of hysterectomy do you recommend? · Will my ovaries or fallopian tubes be removed? · What are the risks and alternatives? 🌟 Being informed and advocating for your health could transform your journey. https://lnkd.in/guUvXRam #WomenHealth #Hysterectomy #AdvocateForYourself

  • 😔What’s Worse Than Being Ill? Not Being Believed. One of the most devastating aspects of illness is having your symptoms dismissed or misdiagnosed—an issue disproportionately affecting women.   💔Women’s Health Dismissed Research reveals that women face a significantly higher likelihood of having their symptoms minimized or attributed to psychological causes rather than physical ones. Chronic conditions, in particular, are often overlooked or misinterpreted, leaving women to suffer unnecessarily.   📊Research Findings Studies show that women receive poorer treatment outcomes for critical conditions like heart attacks and traumatic brain injuries, leading to higher mortality rates compared to men. Similarly, women reporting long COVID symptoms frequently encounter skepticism, further delaying appropriate care. 🚨Medical Gaslighting: A Form of Sexism "Medical gaslighting" refers to the tendency of healthcare providers to dismiss or undermine women’s concerns. Alarmingly, women are twice as likely as men to have physical symptoms attributed to psychological causes, often resulting in misdiagnoses and ineffective treatments. This phenomenon exemplifies systemic sexism in healthcare.   ⚠️The Consequences The impact of medical gaslighting can be severe. Misdiagnoses can lead to untreated or worsening conditions, while social isolation, heightened anxiety, and a reduced quality of life compound the suffering. In extreme cases, the emotional toll may even lead to suicidal thoughts. 💪How to Fight Back 1.     Raise Awareness: Highlight the systemic bias within healthcare systems and the power dynamics between doctors and patients. 2.     Empathy Training for Doctors: Equip medical professionals to listen actively and validate patient concerns, acknowledging that no one knows their own body better than the patient. 3.     Believe Women: When a woman says she is in pain, take her seriously. https://lnkd.in/gC5TMEyS #MedicalGaslighting #WomensHealth #HealthcareBias #GenderDisparitiesInMedicine #HealthcareInequality

  • 💡This article highlights the significant #GenderHealthGap and advocates for increased funding to address women’s unique healthcare needs. It supports calls for Congress to pass a federal appropriations bill that adequately funds research on women’s health. 🕰️Historical Context Until 1993, clinical researchers were not required to include women in clinical studies. In 2016, The National Institutes of Health mandated consideration of sex differences in research. Despite these advances, only 10.8% of their funding is allocated to #WomenHealth. 🩺Current Gaps in #WomensHealthcare Women face persistent disparities in healthcare due to a lack of research and education regarding conditions that disproportionately or uniquely affect them: · #AlzheimersDisease: Nearly two-thirds of those affected are women. · #AutoimmuneDiseases: Women represent about 80% of cases. · #CardiovascularDisease: The leading cause of death for women, yet only one-third of study participants are female, and just 4.5% of NIH’s coronary disease budget supports women-focused research. · Biological Aging: 99% of studies overlook #menopause. · Reproductive Conditions: #Endometriosis and #PremenstrualDysphoricDisorder often take 10–20 years to diagnose. · #MaternalHealth: The U.S. ranks 55th globally in maternal mortality, among the worst in developed nations.   ⚠️ Consequences of this Disparity Due to these gaps, women are expected to spend 25% more of their lives in poor health compared to men. A 2024 analysis revealed that 64% of common medical interventions are less effective or less accessible for women, compared to just 10% for men. 🚀Signs of Progress · The White House Initiative: Since its launch in 2023, nearly $1 billion in funding opportunities have been unlocked for #WomensHealth. · The Department of Defense Commitment: Allocating $500 million annually to research conditions like #OvarianCancer and #RheumatoidArthritis. · ARPA-H Investment: $110 million awarded to accelerate transformative research in #CardiovascularHealth, #endometriosis, and #ObstetricCare. 💰Why This is a Major Opportunity A 2024 analysis by the World Economic Forum and the McKinsey Health Institute found that every $1 invested in women’s health yields $3 in economic growth. Healthier women are more empowered, productive, and economically impactful. 🌟Takeaway While progress has been made, much more work is needed. Funding #WomensHealth is not just a necessity—it’s an investment in society’s future. Urge your Congressperson to prioritize women’s health in the upcoming budget negotiations!   https://lnkd.in/gGR4QpNW #WomensHealth #WomensHealthAccess #WHAM #WomensHealthResearch #GenderHealthGap #WomensHealthEquity
