From the Archives: MercyFirst Celebrates 130 Years! Economic hardships during the Second World War meant fewer foster homes were available for children. As a result, the number of infants living at Angel Guardian Home (today MercyFirst) increased. The Nursey at Angel Guardian was staffed by Sisters of Mercy as well as lay staff. Nurses worked day and night shifts taking care of 10-12 babies each! After the war, homefinding staff were once again able to place children in foster and adoptive homes. Eventually, in 1973, the Nursey program closed because the needs of the children were being met in homes, supported by the social services programs of Angel Guardian. MercyFirst celebrated our new and newly renovated Staten Island Enhanced Family Foster Care (EFFC) Office with a Ribbon Cutting Event held on June 20th. MercyFirst staff were proud to welcome friends, board members, officials, and local community members with a tour of the beautifully designed spaces. The building was transformed with the creation of a warm and inviting reception area, addition of new offices and meeting rooms for staff, and wellness and visiting rooms for children and families. This renovation was made possible thanks to the support from Hyde and Watson Foundation and the Ira W. DeCamp Foundation. Thank you for celebrating with us!
