The global socio-economic impact of mental health disorders is palpable in all communities, and the topic of research is to better diagnose and treat such disorders. Accumulating evidence suggests the potential of metabolomics in identifying metabolite profiles that may serve as biomarkers to improve diagnosis, personalize therapy, and help in better understanding of the biochemical imbalances that underlie mental health disorders. A great article by Dr. Scott Friedman, the discoverer of hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) as the main contributors to extracellular matrix production in liver fibrosis. Activation of HSCs from a quiescent state to myofibroblasts that produce a large amount of extracellular matrix in the liver is associated with clear metabolic changes in these cells. Metaba and MAX BioPharma, Inc. are collaborating to harness the power of metabolomics to further elucidate the mechanism of action of Oxy210 when administered to hepatic stellate cells. Metaba is enthusiastic about beginning a pilot research program to apply our metabolomics expertise with the aim of better understanding cystic fibrosis and finding innovative solutions. Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic disease affecting multiple organs, primarily the lungs and pancreas, caused by mutations in the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) gene. These mutations result in a dysfunctional CFTR protein that is unable to help move chloride to the cell surface resulting in thick and sticky mucus. This mucus can clog the airways and trap bacteria that lead to infections, inflammation, respiratory failure, and other complications.
