Lawyers and Legal Tech AI Vendors - Listen Up! Today was "Private Practice Day" for Day 1 of the Future Contracts Miami conference presented by Law Insider at the University of Miami School of Law. 16 Key Takeaways: Legal Tech Landscape & Implementation Challenges: * Legal tech options are saturated. * Implementation challenges include trust, high licensing fees, and client concerns about privacy and confidentiality. * Partners want to see their own documents in demos, but there are NDAs and client security concerns that need to be met first. AI Security & Ethical Considerations: * When the AI tool was designed specifically for law, security is there. * Make sure your team knows how they can or can't use it. Multi-million dollar cases have been lost to Motion for Summary Judgment when AI was used improperly. * The unlicensed practice of law is a felony. Be careful that your AI tool is not practicing law. The Evolving Role of Lawyers & Billable Hours: * The billable hour is not what it used to be. * Teach lawyers how to use the time saved by using AI to earn new business and be more profitable. * Be the best professional that you can be for the tasks that AI cannot do. * Lawyers need to learn how to sell and be thoughtful, creative, and aware of what's going on with your client's or prospect's business, and leverage technology as part of your solution. * AI will make things harder for junior level associates because they have to learn from techno-phobe senior partners as well as try to be experts on AI and tech. AI Capabilities & Client Expectations: * AI does not get tired or need to get home for dinner or the kids games. Leverage it. * Use AI for tasks that you can automate. * Client expectations are a mixed bag. Some expect efficiencies; others are more cautious about privacy, security, and confidentiality. * AI adoption is happening for legal tasks at a more routine, every-day use level, like eDiscovery and digital testimony. Market Dynamics: * Is this a technology PUSH or a market PULL? It's both. ...and I picked up some #SoSoxy socks for Doug Kaminski. It was great running into friends, Cash Butler, Zeke Alicea, and Marimer Muñoz, and making new friends Timo Karakashev of Cosmonauts, Stephanie Sánchez Peña Kushida, Marc Goldsand, Skye Anderson, and Carolyn Chen.
