Welcome to our restoration series, where we tap into the power of forests. Meet Kirtland’s Warbler, one of the world’s most elusive birds. American Forests has been supporting painstaking, cooperative restoration efforts by state and federal agencies to manage this warbler’s limited breeding grounds in northern Michigan, parts of Wisconsin and Ontario, Canada since 1990. We sponsor the Kirtland’s Warbler program with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, a multiple year agreement that began in 2017. Our Office of Public Lands is proud to be collaborating with a local Michigan business to protect the natural landscapes that mean so much to us as Michiganders. Saugatuck Brewing Company created the Rainbow Rodeo IPA to shine a light on Michigan’s fly-fishing reputation, and now it’s working to protect just that. This partnership with SBC helps raise awareness and funding for statewide aquatic habitat restoration, stream health evaluations and invasive species control. The partnership runs through October and purchases of this IPA will raise funds for these vital projects.

Did you know the Great Lakes have reefs? The Buffalo Reef, located in Lake Superior, is important to fish as a habitat for spawning and rearing. This 2,200-acre reef faces threats from disposed stamp sands, a waste material from a historic copper mining process. The project to protect this reef has been ongoing since 2017, with multiple milestones outlined at Michigan.gov/BuffaloReef Recently, the Buffalo Reef Task Force has narrowed down plans for disposing of the stamp sands. As part of the process, public feedback is being accepted through March 1, 2024. We encourage interested individuals to weigh in and help shape the process of protecting fish habitat in the Great Lakes. https://lnkd.in/gZfJVtH8
