Providing the best-proven method for decarbonization in the iron and steel industry- direct reduction.
About us
At Midrex, we believe two things to be true: our world needs the steel industry, and the steel industry cannot survive unless we develop a way to produce high-grade steel while minimizing greenhouse gases. Our solution is the MIDREX Direct Reduction Process, a method for producing direct reduced iron (DRI), an efficient and sustainable feedstock for various steel making technologies. Using hydrogen to remove the oxygen from iron ore without melting, the Midrex process can reduce CO2 emissions in ironmaking to nearly zero. Every day, our Midrex team is working to create a sustainable future for iron and steel, designing, building, and supporting DRI plants all around the world. Not only are these plants more energy efficient and sustainable, they’re also the most profitable to own and operate, creating new opportunities for iron and steel makers. Since 1987, Midrex has been the world leader in direct reduction technology, offering the best-proven method for decarbonization in the iron and steel industry available today. Our rapid growth is transforming the steel industry and our planet. And none of it would be possible without our people, who bring vision, compassion, and extraordinary expertise to this work every day. By continuing to recruit the brightest minds in engineering, research and development, and business, we will continue to expand our footprint, offering the most sustainable solutions to our global customers.

Next up in the Midrex Iron & Steel Glossary is the term METALLICS. Metallics are metals or iron-containing materials used as feedstocks in steel production. These include: - Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) - Hot Briquetted Iron (HBI) - Pig Iron - Scrap These materials are essential in modern steelmaking processes as they provide the iron content needed for high-quality steel production in both Electric Arc Furnaces (EAFs) and Blast Furnaces (BFs). At Midrex, we provide cutting-edge DRI and HBI solutions. We are technology innovators focused on making iron and steel production efficient and sustainable. Our Midrex Iron & Steel Glossary aims to break down the key terms of steelmaking with a focus on Direct Reduction processes. Which term would you like us to define next? Midrex and SMS group have been selected by TOSYALI SULB for DRI Complex The first phase includes a 2.5 million tons per year MIDREX Flex® Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) plant in Libya. This facility will significantly expand low-CO₂ iron production capacity in the region, supplying high-quality cold DRI (CDRI) to steelmakers across the Mediterranean basin to meet the growing demand for sustainable feedstock in steelmaking. The plant will utilize MIDREX Flex technology, allowing for a phased transition from natural gas to hydrogen as availability increases. This makes it one of the most future-ready DRI production facilities in the region. With the ability to transition from natural gas to hydrogen, this plant gives steelmakers a practical way to cut emissions while maintaining operational flexibility. For TOSYALI SULB, this investment marks a major step toward cleaner iron production and strengthens the development of a more sustainable steel industry in North Africa. “At Tosyalı Holding, we place environmental sustainability at the core of our operations and work tirelessly to develop innovative solutions that reduce carbon emissions. With MIDREX technology, we will leverage the flexible use of natural gas and hydrogen to support the production of low-carbon, high-quality steel, creating value for both the region and the world.” Fuat Tosyali, Chairman of TOSYALI Holding, said. The push for green iron and steel production is gathering strength! Users in the automotive industry and beyond are demanding iron and steel to be greener. Volkswagen, for example, has recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with steelmaker thyssenkrupp to buy their low CO2 emission steel. This greener metal will be produced at thyssenkrupp Steel’s MIDREX Flex plant. This innovative plant will produce Hot Direct Reduced Iron (HDRI) and Cold Direct Reduced Iron (HDRI) in Duisburg, Germany, and thanks to its flexible configuration, it can be powered by hydrogen and green electricity. What is low CO2 DRI? DRI produced using natural gas has significantly lower CO2 emissions than DRI produced with coal. Natural gas is generally the main source of reducing gas in shaft furnace-based processes. In 2023, more than 2/3 of the global DRI output was natural gas-based low carbon DRI, while coal-based DRI represented almost 1/3 of total output. But the share of coal-based DRI has grown due to the faster growth in DRI produced in India using rotary kilns. We want this trend to reverse. MIDREX® Plants produce low-carbon DRI. MIDREX Flex® allows the use of both natural gas and green hydrogen, and MIDREX H2™ is optimized to be fully fed by hydrogen. This means they can run without any fossil fuel input, cutting CO2 emissions from the process to near zero! Our team is at work to build thyssenkrupp's innovative MIDREX Flex® plant! The new MIDREX Flex plant will produce 2.5 million tonnes of Hot Direct Reduced Iron (HDRI) & Cold Direct Reduced Iron (CDRI) annually, which will be used in new electric smelters provided by our partner SMS group. The configuration will give thyssenkrupp the flexibility to operate at different ratios of natural gas and hydrogen. This is a major step in thyssenkrupp’s conversion of its integrated steelworks to a climate-neutral production site! Midrex is a leader in technological iron and steelmaking advancements. Introducing the Midrex Iron & Steel Glossary! In the steel industry, language can be confusing, technical and full of acronyms. We at Midrex would like to shed light on some of the key terms that describe materials, systems and technologies that play a critical role in steelmaking, with a focus on direct reduction (DR) processes. Whether you are an experienced professional in metals or related industries or just curious about the technology driving decarbonization in the steel industry, this glossary is for you. Let’s start with an essential term: DR PELLET. Direct Reduction (DR) pellets are a premium type of iron ore pellet used as a feed in Direct Reduction plants. Here’s what makes DR pellets special: - Higher Grade: DR pellets have a high iron (Fe) content, usually 67% or more. - Low Impurities: With fewer unwanted elements, they produce cleaner steel. - Ideal for Direct Reduction: Optimized for processes like Midrex technology, they ensure efficient conversion to Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) or Hot Briquetted Iron (HBI). What other terms would you like to see explained? Let us know in the comments and follow us for more terms and insights, as we build the Midrex Iron & Steel Glossary together! #Steelindustry #Innovation #Decarbonization #Sustainability #Technology #Glossary #Midrex

Companies in the steel sector are joining forces as the race to decarbonize the industry gathers pace. In Europe, for example, companies from France, Germany, Portugal, and Spain have formed the European Hydrogen Alliance, an initiative aiming to create a hydrogen single market for the region by connecting hydrogen production, storage, and consumption projects. This type of partnership is spurred by the need and commitment to reduce emissions in steelmaking and adopt sustainable technologies.
