“MMSD has reversed course over the last decade or so, working to re-naturalize the Kinnickinnic River watershed, which is the most densely populated and urbanized watershed in the state of Wisconsin. More than 600 homes and commercial buildings sit within the 100-year floodplain, according to MMSD. The effort has now moved to Jackson Park, where the MMSD is removing the concrete channel, giving the river room to spread out during heavy rainfall and expanding its ability to hold stormwater, thereby reducing flooding and dangerous stream conditions.” https://lnkd.in/gF5HXbrp

Winter flooding is a risk due to snowmelt and rain from temperatures warming after the extreme cold this past week. Frozen ground is unable to absorb water and snow, and run-off immediately flows to the sewers. As a result, flooding may occur when the sewer system becomes overwhelmed from the combination of normal sewage flow, rain water and snow melt. Protect your home and business by reducing your water use, dig out the discharge for your downspouts, and checking storm drains are clear and not buried under snow. Students at Schlitz Audubon Nature Center take STEM learning out of the classroom to the shore of Lake Michigan. The students learned about the impact of trash in our waterways by collecting data at the shoreline of Lake Michigan.
