About us

The Minnesota Alliance for Volunteer Advancement (MAVA) advances the power of volunteerism to deepen community impact through uplifting community voice, building connections, providing education, and promoting advocacy. MAVA’s work is rooted in advancing equity for all marginalized and underrepresented communities across Minnesota. Through our strategies of field-based data research and uniquely designed training and workshops, we aim to curate spaces and opportunities to inform and educate the non-profit sector on the importance of intergenerational equity in volunteerism and the embedding a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion into their way of work. MAVA’s value proposition as the only intermediary in our region that is centered on dismantling inequities in volunteerism and providing DEIAJ training and workshops exemplifies why we are the trusted leader in learning, advocacy, and capacity building. Our core values represent our talent, how we engage externally, and with each other. They are: ● Volunteerism: Volunteers make our communities better. ● Education: Trained volunteer leaders are vital to maximizing success. ● Connection: Sharing and networking builds our profession. ● Inclusion: Diverse backgrounds and viewpoints make us stronger ● Collaboration: Partnerships allow us to work together for greater impact. ● Research: Understanding trends helps us craft a better future.

  • One week left to join us! Don’t miss your chance to be part of MAVA’s 5th Annual Virtual Dismantling Inequities Conference: The Empathy Effect Transforming Volunteerism. Hear from our Day Two speaker, Jaralyn Roberts. "Jaralyn Roberts is a leadership development practitioner focusing on the intersection of trauma and leadership. She also coaches leaders to use self-discovery as a way to strengthen their leadership and pursue potential. In her session, ‘What’s in your bag? How unhealed wounds impact those you intend to help”- you will use self-discovery as a tool to unpack and examine how your life's challenges and experiences impact the way you show up and interact with others. Participants will be guided through reflective prompts and exposed to tools that will help in their process of becoming more self-aware and introspective. Self-reflection is transformational work!" • What if we could harness the power of empathy to create a more just and equitable world? MAVA's 5th Annual Virtual Conference is exploring just that. With 2 weeks left, Join us this December 5 & 6. Hear from our Day One Breakout Speaker, Johnanna Ganz, Ph.D. "From avoiding tough performance management conversations to redirecting the focus of critical feedback to their feelings to ignoring the real needs of communities served by programs in favor of keeping funders or community partners happy, all of these are examples of insidious niceness. Niceness that hurts, disempowers, or actively supports oppressive systems is the focus of Insidious Niceness: Understanding and Responding to the Intersections of Whiteness, Femininity, and Power in Helping Profession. Join Dr. Johnanna Ganz (they/them), an organizational developer specializing in mission-driven work and people, who sees the results of the troubling ways many of us use “being nice” to avoid authentic, challenging, or growth-oriented relationships. Come ready to learn new tools and strategies to build your conflict and community skills or learn more about Dr. Ganz's work at jganzconsulting.com" To learn more or to register click the link below. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/gEvfdQN9 #conference #leadershipdevelopment #volunteerism #communication #DEI #volunteerengagement #volunteermanagement

What if we could harness the power of empathy to create a more just and equitable world? MAVA's 5th Annual Virtual Conference is exploring just that. With 2 weeks left, Join us this December 5 & 6. Hear from our Day One Breakout Speaker, 🌎 Luiza Dreasher, Ph.D. "Are you involved in volunteer management or community work? Have you ever considered the subtle, often overlooked behaviors that might affect your volunteer environment? Microaggressions—small, seemingly innocuous remarks or actions—can significantly undermine the sense of inclusion and belonging within volunteer spaces. Join the session "Navigating Microaggressions: Building Inclusive Volunteer Spaces" at the upcoming conference to uncover the true impact of microaggressions on volunteers and organizations alike. In this engaging session, you’ll gain a comprehensive understanding of what microaggressions are, how to recognize them, and practical strategies to address and prevent them. By learning to identify and mitigate these behaviors, you can create an atmosphere where every volunteer feels valued, respected, and empowered to contribute fully. Led by Dr. Luiza Dreasher, an expert in DEI+ strategies and cultural competence development, this highly interactive session will not only inform but inspire you to foster more inclusive and effective volunteer teams. Don’t miss this chance to enhance both your professional skills and personal growth by building volunteer spaces where inclusion is not just an aspiration but a reality. • 2 Weeks left to register for our 5th Annual Virtual Dismantling Inequities Conference: The Empathy Effect Transforming Volunteerism. Hear from Day One breakout speaker Kristie Lazenberry in her session "Identity - Understanding Yourself to Understand Others". Register Now to empower yourself to create a more equitable future. "When I was 11, I witnessed a cross burning at the church across the street from our house. Then, I witnessed my father follow the perpetrators to their home, get the address, and report it to the police. They were arrested. It wasn’t the cross burning that stayed with me; it was what my father did – he took action. That’s what has motivated and inspired me to pursue this work. I have over 20 years of facilitating, creating, and leading others towards a more just world. The workshop I will be presenting, “Identity – Understanding Yourself to Understand Others”, will focus on how our own personal narratives – our life experiences – shape us into who we are today. Our beliefs, how we react, and how we lead all come from our experiences. Once you can see how your own life has been shaped (i.e., how I was affected by that experience with my father), it’s much easier to understand how someone else’s life experiences have shaped them. This allows grace, a greater understanding of others, and a more empathetic approach to all you do. Join me as we dig into our past, relate it to our present, and consider how we can use that knowledge and understanding going forward as we relate to our neighbors, our communities, our work colleagues, and ourselves. And bring your A game!" You can also learn from the 17 other speakers and unlock the power of empathy in volunteerism. Register now for December 5th and 6th to make a difference. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/gEvfdQN9 #conference #leadershipdevelopment #volunteerism #communication #DEI #volunteerengagement
