Today Commission Chair Sieben and Vice Chair Joseph Sullivan helped celebrate the completion of the first phase of Xcel Energy's Sherco Solar - the largest solar project in the Upper Midwest. Once it's fully complete, the 710-megawatt project will generate enough low-cost, carbon-free electricity to power 150,000 homes and moves Minnesota closer to meeting its goal of transitioning to 100% clean energy by 2040.

Today federal and state energy leaders gathered at the Minnesota Power substation in Hermantown to recognize the modernization and expansion of its HVDC transmission system. Built in 1977, it is one of the few #HVDC #transmission lines in the country. Replacing aging infrastructure with modern technology is critical to the #reliability and #resiliency of the grid. “The Commission is committed to ensuring the reliable and affordable delivery of essential energy to all Minnesotans and modernizing this transmission infrastructure is a critical step. This upgrade not only enhances the strength of the grid in Northern Minnesota, but it also assists in achieving our carbon-free goals by facilitating the delivery of low-cost renewable energy to Minnesota Power's diverse customer base.” - Commission Chair Katie Sieben
