About us
Missouri Coalition for the Environment (MCE) is Missouri’s independent, citizens' environmental organization for clean water, clean air, clean energy, and a healthy environment. With the help of our members and allies we are making the world a better place. We believe our air, water, and land are gifts to sustain all life and we believe these resources should be available to serve the public interest today and for all future generations and not sacrificed for short-term gain. This work requires vigilance, stewardship, advocacy, compassion, and a heck of a sense of humor. We hope you will join us.

MCE monitors state bills and mobilizes Missourians to take action during the #moleg session! 📜🌱 One bill we are excited about is SB 400, which will reinstate local governments' ability to pass health ordinances to protect their communities from the harms of industrial animal agriculture and its waste. You can follow along on this bill's journey through session by signing up for our e-alerts and visiting our 2025 Bill Tracker Page: https://lnkd.in/g6NqmyX4

Decades of nuclear waste exposure near #ColdwaterCreek in Missouri have left communities at risk of cancers like leukemia and lung cancer. Efforts to expand the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act (RECA), championed by Sen. Josh Hawley and Rep. Cori Bush, were stalled as Congress ended its session this week. Despite bipartisan support, House Speaker Mike Johnson didn't bring the bill to a vote, leaving survivors without justice or a path to compensation. We are deeply inspired by the resilience and dedication of our Community Outreach Specialist, Christen Commuso, who is featured in the story. Not only has she courageously shared her personal story and experiences, but she has also been a tireless advocate on the frontlines of this issue. MCE, in partnership with the STL Toxic Waste Alliance, remains committed to working alongside organizations like Just Moms STL to continue demanding action on the radioactive waste left behind by the Manhattan Project during WWII. Though this session's outcome was not ideal, we are proud of the momentum created behind the bill in 2024, including the support received from Utah's Congressional delegation in Washington, D.C. The fight for justice is far from over. The bill will be reintroduced in January 2025, when the new Congress convenes, and we’ll continue pushing for compensation and accountability. A huge thank you to Gabrielle Hays for her work in raising awareness about this important issue and amplifying the voices of those affected by Coldwater Creek's radioactive contamination. Read more in the article on PBS News, and be prepared to hear more about this bill when session resumes in January 2025: https://lnkd.in/geJ47skF #environmentaljustice #manhattanproject #toxicwaste #MoEnvironment

U.S. Strategic Metals is currently mining cobalt and planning an entire network of facilities at and near the Madison Mine site, claiming it’s “the largest cobalt reserve in North America.” But the risks (including radioactive emissions, cancer-causing toxins, and water contamination) far outweigh the benefits. The company admits it has only an 18-year supply, but the harm from mining and refining could last for generations in our state. Missouri’s laws aren’t enough to protect our communities. Community members in Madison and St. Francois Counties are concerned and speaking out to legislators, the media, and to MCE. Our Policy Director Melissa Vatterott and MCE staff are working with them on a multi-prong approach to address this environmental injustice. Learn how USSM’s efforts could harm your health, air, water, and land — and how you can help stop harmful mining and battery-related activities on our blog: https://lnkd.in/gm5Hij8f #moenvironment #mining #cleanair #cleanwater #missouri
