“This photo was taken some time in the 1975-76 academic year in our dorm suite at Burton-Conner,” recalls Adam Schneider ’78, pictured far right with (from left) Michael Dinovi ’77; Stephen Pratt ’78, SM ’80; Mike Royal ’76; and Gerald Landau ’77. “We were in Conner Suite 511. We had just made scratch pizza and were scarfing it down. . . . Since the main MIT dining halls were pretty far away, everyone was always cooking something. In addition to breakfast, lunch, and dinner, we made pumpkin pies for Halloween, holiday cookies, and—in this case—freshly baked pizza in the kitchens in the suites.” https://bit.ly/49vqSAn

MIT | Mind & Hands Community 🇦🇹 Austria 🇺🇸 The large majority of alumni from MIT residing in Austria have not known each other, either because of different times at campus or then being in different departments. 🎯 But at MIT — if you walked the infinite corridor, it doesn’t matter when and where; what matters is the like-minded spirit and community striving for the advancement of science, new insight, and applicationsz that make a difference. 🔗Reconnecting and building new connections in that same spirit is one of the objectives of the MIT Club of Austria (MITCA) and we are glad to do so with fellows from other cool places, whether having a dinner or getting together at other events. Always a pleasure and feeling that relives the days then on campus. 🍽️ At the table Christopher Fodor, Mayo T., Tara Andrews, Daniel Pressl, Dr. Julia Skobeleva, Xiaomin Mou, Anastasia Gromova-Schneider, Stefano Bindoni, Michael Hofbaur and in-between and later joining fellows + friends. THANKSGIVING DINNER | Vienna We have been having our dinner around Thanksgiving since 2O15 at the Magazin in Vienna. Then, it was the first year of the club. Over the years, it has become a tradition to get together with fellow alumni from MIT and from other clubs to enjoy an evening, seeing fellows and friends again and meeting new people of our larger community. Thanks for taking the time to join us!

Startup Lumicell has developed a way to give surgeons a real-time view of breast cancer during surgery. The company, whose cofounders include W. David Lee ’69, SM ’70 and MIT professors Linda Griffith and Moungi Bawendi, has developed a system for scanning tissue for residual cancer cells, reducing the need for additional surgeries for breast cancer patients. https://bit.ly/3ZDxDwL

When Amrita Saigal ’10 decided to wear a trash bag on national television on the American TV show “Shark Tank,” it was not a fashion statement. “Most consumers don’t realize that even the softest diapers are made of plastic. To make this point, I decided to wear a plastic garbage bag to show how babies wearing traditional diapers are basically wrapped in plastic 24/7,” explains the founder of Kudos, a diaper company that has created the first 100-percent cotton-lined disposable diaper. https://bit.ly/41jxWOm Amrita Saigal

"It is every club president's dream to host the President of MIT", said my predecessor and I couldn't agree more. It was indeed a dream come true to not only host but also be able to moderate a fire side chat with MIT President Sally Kornbluth for our GALA commemorating 150th anniversary of the graduation 👨🎓 of the first Japanese 🇯🇵 student from MIT. Despite the amount of work it took to make this GALA possible, the dream never became a nightmare due to the tremendous support we received from the MIT Alumni Association, especially from Nureen Das and her team and the directors of MIT Club of Japan, in particular my fellow GALA committee members Hiro Iwashima, Cherry G., Kohei Wakayama, Tadayasu Nishida, and Nanako Tanaka. I cannot thank everyone who attended the event enough, especially those who came all the way from the States starting with Sally, MITAA CEO Whitney Espich and MITAA President Natalie Lorenz Anderson. I love it that we have so many great female role models at MIT. The GALA was truly a great moment showcasing the long history between Japan and MIT, which was enriched by the great talk by Prof. Nagahara. A shout out also goes to Christine Pilcavage for her support and to all the former presidents and directors who created the basis of this strong bond. Last but not least, I would also like to thank my family, esp. Matthew Romaine, for being such a great cheerleader from the beginning. #MIT #MITJapanGALA #150Years Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Last Thursday, I had the privilege of presenting at the #MIT Clubs of #Rochester and Western New York, where I shared my journey from MIT to building a startup in the traditional and complex #dairy industry. During the presentation, I discussed how we developed innovative #milk testing solutions while overcoming significant hurdles along the way. I also highlighted the unique opportunities that this region offers, including its rich resources in #agriculture, #optics engineering, and #manufacturing. I hope my talk inspired current and aspiring entrepreneurs and provided valuable lessons for those looking to make their mark in Western New York and beyond. Thank you to the MIT Alumni Association community for the opportunity to share Labby’s story and connect with such an engaged audience!

GRIA (Grown in Africa), founded by Joshua Reed-Diawuoh MBA ’20, partners with companies that ethically source cashews and other foods. Cashew companies receive a “Fairtrade Premium,” which Reed-Diawuoh explains “goes to the producer cooperatives, or the farmers working the land, and they can invest that in any way they choose. They can put it back into their business, they can start new community development projects, like building schools or improving wastewater infrastructure, whatever they want.” https://bit.ly/4fVsTHW
