Starting February 2025, MitoCanada’s iconic annual #spinathon event, previously known as #MitoSpin, will take on an exciting new format! Rather than being hosted directly by #MitoCanada, this event is evolving into a community-led initiative, empowering our incredible #MitoCommunity supporters to lead the charge in raising awareness and vital funds in support of MitoCanada’s research, education, and support programs. This year, we’re thrilled to announce community spinning events in Victoria, Calgary, Winnipeg, and virtually through #Zwift. These events are a powerful way to unite #Canadians, whether in person or online, to support the mito cause. We invite you to start your own event or join one of these events. Creating a world where all lives are powered by healthy mitochondria.
About us
Without energy, we cannot survive. It is as simple – and complex – as that. The human body is fuelled by trillions of microscopic powerhouses called mitochondria. Present in almost every cell in our bodies, these tiny but mighty, energy-producing structures generate the energy we need to survive. When mitochondria are dysfunctional, the impact on the body can be devastating. Those affected can suffer a myriad of symptoms that cause health and quality of life to decline and, for too many, result in death. Mitochondrial disease can affect anyone at any age. There is no cure. MitoCanada is dedicated to creating a world where all lives are powered by healthy mitochondria. For over ten years, MitoCanada has worked tirelessly to help support and protect Canadians living with or at risk of developing mitochondrial disease. The Foundation is driving a paradigm shift to bring about meaningful change, and ultimately, the eradication of mitochondrial disease. We do this through four areas of impact: support, education, awareness and advocacy, and research.

We’re thrilled to share an update from one of our stellar 2024 #mitoScholar recipients, Veronica Jenkins, who just completed the first term of her first year at the Alberta University of the Arts, where she’s pursuing a Bachelor of Design. “I’d say, honestly, I’m settling in pretty well,” says Veronica. “Naturally it took some time to get used to the new environment and classes, but overall I love it. As of right now, the thing I’ve enjoyed the most is definitely the people I’ve met. It’s genuinely just so refreshing to be surrounded by so many like-minded people. I’ve been able to connect with so many people, and I’m so happy to be able to continue to do so in the years to come.” What a wonderful update – we’re so pleased to hear it! New on MitoNews Today: How does having a sibling with a rare disease impact quality of life and mental health? A recent systematic review explores the experiences of #siblings of children with rare diseases, highlighting potential challenges in their quality of life and mental health. The findings emphasize the importance of addressing the psychosocial impact on the whole family, not just the individual with the rare disease. This research is a vital reminder of the broader impact of #rarediseases on families and the importance of holistic care. Read more about the findings on our website: https://lnkd.in/eEjjw5ib
