Is Rwanda🇷🇼 leading Africa’s e-mobility 🔋🛺 transition?? We (MobilityX Africa) have been digging into some data on Rwanda and their amazing blueprint for transforming their transport industry. Here is what we found, really exciting stuff! 🇷🇼 RWANDA'S TRANSPORT EVOLUTION: 1927-2024 📅 A BRIEF HISTORY - First vehicle in Rwanda: 1927 - Registered vehicles (2023): ~270,000 (2% motorisation rate) - Current EV fleet: 7,000+ vehicles 🚗 Here is how Rwanda is transforming their transport industry ⚡ Their EV industry is growing - 19 EVs (2020) → 7,000+ EVs & hybrids (2024) - 200 charging stations in Kigali alone - 60% lower operating costs vs ICE vehicles 🏢 They put effective policy into action - Zero import duty on EVs - 15% corporate tax for e-mobility investors - $0.10/kWh charging rate (vs $0.20/kWh standard) - 7-year tax holiday for manufacturers 🛵 They made bold moves in the right direction - Banning petrol motorcycles from 2025 - Target: 30% electric motorcycles by 2030 - 110,000 motorbikes of which 46,000 moto-taxis ready for conversion - $22M projected annual fuel import savings 💰 They focussed on getting consumers economics right - EV riders save $3-4/day (vs $1-2 ICE) - 60km per battery charge at $1.5 - 5-year total ownership cost: $41K (EV) vs $44K (ICE) - $900M allocated for e-mobility transition 🤝 KEY ECOSYSTEM PLAYERS: These are some of the organisations and people involved in improving the transport ecosystem Rwanda Environment Management Authority (REMA) UNDP Rwanda - Maxwell Gomera, Mujawamariya Jeanne d'Arc, Donald Kabanda (Rwanda Green Fund REM - Rwanda Electric Motors, Rwanda Ministry of Infrastructure(MININFRA), Carly Koinange (UN Environment Programme) Ariane Mucyo (Urban Electric Mobility Initiative (UEMI) Electric Mobility Initiative) 🏭 LOCAL OEM CHAMPIONS: Ampersand Energy GURARIDE Rwanda OX Delivers Kabisa IZI Electric, eBee.africa We are analysing 12 African countries to understand and share how they are shifting to wants a more sustainable transport system.
