The FDA initiated a "New Alternative Methods Program" to reduce reliance on animal testing by promoting alternative testing methods that can enhance safety and effectiveness predictions for FDA-regulated products. This program, supported by $5 million in new funding, is coordinated by the FDA’s Office of the Chief Scientist and aims to prevent high-risk products from reaching the market and improve testing predictivity. The FDA's approach includes qualifying alternative methods for specific regulatory contexts, such as nonclinical pharmacology and toxicology assays and microphysiological systems, and providing industry guidance on these qualified methods. The FDA’s initiatives include establishing cross-agency working groups, such as the Alternative Methods Working Group, which explores new in vitro, in vivo, and in silico methods, and the Modeling and Simulation Working Group, which uses computational modeling to support regulatory decisions. Other FDA projects include human organ chips, machine learning models for coronavirus research, and 3D cell culture platforms for drug testing.
