#recruitment Meet Hermano, recruited as a Health Surveillance Researcher by PICTIS Plataforma Internacional to work mainly in the Amazon region. "Hi, my name is Hermano Gomes Albuquerque. I have a PhD on malaria surveillance model from PAHO and WHO and I am a Health Surveillance Researcher in the MOSAIC project at PICTIS. In the project, I will work on integrating the databases and building explanatory and predictive models for the emergence of infectious and parasitic diseases, taking into account their social, environmental, and climatic determinants. Furthermore, I will collaborate to ensure that this knowledge is discussed with local communities to explore adaptation and mitigation strategies together." Welcome to the team Hermano !

As recently as Wednesday, Paulo P. presented the MOSAIC european project- IRD at the IRD representation in Cayenne, French Guiana. Paulo P. is a health geography researcher based in Brazil, at PICTIS Plataforma Internacional/FIOCRUZ - Fundação Oswaldo Cruz. He is the leader of the “Shared science with stakeholders” working group (WP1) in our project. We will be working closely with a number actors in French Guiana, including our Partner Centre Hospitalier de Cayenne - Andrée Rosemon, in connection with one of our study sites located between the Brazilian border and French Guiana, at Oiapoque. IRD, CNRS, Université de Guyane, Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle de Guyane, Inserm, Oiapoque hospital and Observatoire Régional de la Santé de Guyane - Centre Territorial de Promotion de la Santé were represented. Thanks to all participants and especially to Patricia MOULIN, director of the IRD office in Cayenne, for receiving us. 📄 The Science Panel for the Amazon recently published a policy brief 'Health in the Amazon: Environmental, Social and Economic Challenges', highlighting that "the region faces a four-fold burden of accelerating climate change, biodiversity loss, ecosystem pollution and deforestation, and intensive and extensive use of pesticides which have a large negative impact on the health of Amazonian people." 🔥 "For example, the extreme droughts of 2023 and 2024 have led to an increase in wildfires, releasing pollutants causing respiratory and cardiovascular diseases." 🔎 "These negative effects are exacerbated by the fact that the region is characterized by socioeconomic inequalities, lack of access to basic amenities, violence, and difficulties in implementing public policies" 👨👩👦👦 "Indigenous communities are particularly vulnerable due to their reliance on forest resources and high exposure to the extreme weather events, immunity issues, multidimensional poverty, and low education levels." A particularly inspiring policy brief for the MOSAIC european project- IRD project. Thank you to Science Panel for the Amazon for that work ! 📽️ Watch our video about our first fieldwork mission to Amboseli, on the border between Kenya and Tanzania. During this mission, we were able to exhange with the Maasai community who have been working with the African Conservation Center on conservation for years. We were able to introduce them to the MOSAIC project and concepts such as ‘One Health’ and ‘Open Science’. It was clear that they already have a deep understanding of the mechanisms linking pasture health, livestock and human well-being. The health and well-being of the Maasai population is univocally conditioned to the good condition of the livestock. "During the meeting, the Maasai expressed growing concern over the disappearance of grass species with high nutritional value and medicinal plants. They are seeking explanations for these changes, hoping that the open science research from the MOSAIC project will address their concerns and provide solutions beyond the impacts of climate change and environmental degradation." #recruitment Good news! The IRD has recruited a new post-doc for the project. sara MOBSITE, PhD will be working mainly on WP3 with Joris Guerin. "Hi, my name is Sara Mobsite. I am a new postdoctoral researcher for the MOSAIC project at IRD. I recently completed my Ph.D. in Computer Vision at the International University of Rabat, Morocco. My work on this project will focus on developing deep learning models to predict and detect environmental and health challenges impacting the regions of East Africa and the Amazon." Welcome to the team Sara !

The MOSAIC team has just completed its first field mission in Brazil, to the two Amazon study sites (on the border between Peru, Colombia and Brazil, and on the border between French Guiana and Brazil). The mission provided an opportunity to meet the project's key stakeholders and gain a better understanding of the current issues and needs of local populations. The Amazon is currently experiencing a period of historic drought, which has led to fires and made some villages inaccessible by river. This can have considerable impacts on ecosystems, wildlife and the health and well-being of local populations. The team, which has come back even stronger from this experience, now has concrete solutions to cooperate with local communities, in order to identify their needs and co-construct concrete solutions. Special thanks to our partners PICTIS Plataforma Internacional/FIOCRUZ - Fundação Oswaldo Cruz and Universidad Nacional de Colombia (Sede Amazonia) for organising the mission and receiving us in Leticia and to Universidade Federal do Amapá (UNIFAP) for receiving us in Oiapoque ! #planetaryhealth #onehealth #participatoryresearch A big thank you to all our partners for their participation: IRD African Conservation Center PICTIS Plataforma Internacional IGOT-ULisboa - Instituto de Geografia e Ordenamento do Território FIOCRUZ - Fundação Oswaldo Cruz ICM University of Warsaw Université d'Artois Institut Pasteur de la Guyane Centre Hospitalier de Cayenne - Andrée Rosemon Universidad Nacional de Colombia Universidade de Brasília

Today is One Health Day. The health of humans, animals and ecosystems are closely interlinked. Changes in these relationships can increase the risk of new human and animal diseases developing and spreading. #OneHealth is an approach to optimize the health of humans, animals and ecosystems by integrating these fields, rather than keeping them separate The One Health approach is for everyone! No matter who you are, where you live, you have a role in it! https://bit.ly/40A3wa6

🆕 The Lancet Countdown on Health and Climate Change’s latest report shows record breaking health threats from climate change. While climate action is limited by a scarcity of funding, financial resources continue to be allocated to activities that harm health and hinder the transition to net zero greenhouse gas emissions. ❌ These investments jeopardise people’s wellbeing, health and survival which heavily depend on phasing out fossil fuels ❌ These investments further escalate climate risks for future generations ❌ These investments set us up for financial turmoil as we pursue a liveable future People’s health must be put front and centre of climate change action to ensure the funding mechanisms protect wellbeing, reduce health inequities and maximise health gains, especially for the countries and communities that need it most. 📰 [Fieldwork mission report, East Africa, meeting with local stakeholders and the Maasai community] Here is an initial report on our first field mission to Kenya in September, written by Dr. Victor N. Mose, the co-director of the African Conservation Center : "Maasai Claim Longstanding Use of One Health Approach in Rangelands". According to Victor, "[...] it became evident that the Maasai have intuitively practiced One Health principles long before they were formalized, demonstrating their deep understanding of the links between pasture health, livestock, and human well-being". "During the meeting, the Maasai expressed growing concern over the disappearance of grass species with high nutritional value and medicinal plants. They are seeking explanations for these changes, hoping that the open science research from the MOSAIC project will address their concerns and provide solutions beyond the impacts of climate change and environmental degradation." After this first meeting, it is clear that local communities expect answers and tools from the MOSAIC european project- IRD. A huge challenge for the team that is determined to meet, using participative approaches. We'll be sending you more results from this first mission soon... In the meantime, we'll see you next week for our first mission to the Amazon study sites! #onehealth #participatoryresearch IRD African Conservation Center PICTIS Plataforma Internacional IGOT-ULisboa - Instituto de Geografia e Ordenamento do Território FIOCRUZ - Fundação Oswaldo Cruz ICM University of Warsaw The Amboseli Ecosystem Trust
