⛰️Exciting news! A new article about the Lapland demo region is out!🚨 The Effects of Climate Change Are Most Severe in the Arctic Region The Arctic region is warming up to four times faster than the rest of the world, bringing with it numerous challenges for both the environment and livelihoods. According to forecasts, the climate in Lapland, Finland could be 4–5 degrees warmer by 2080 than it is now, which will be evident in shorter winters, fewer days of frost, and reduced snow cover in early and late winter. The article covers: 🦌 How climate change is affecting Lapland and its reindeer husbandry 🤝 The climate cooperation among the 21 municipalities of Lapland 🌊 The situation in the Teno River 🧠 How traditional knowledge supports climate resilience strategies in the region Check out this article written by the MountResilience partners in Lapland: https://lnkd.in/ebkZEH6Q Johanna Pikkukangas

🌱 Public acceptance of #NatureBaseSolutions (#NBS) is driven not only by having experienced a reduction in #ClimateRisk but also by what is valued by local citizens, how they perceive the risks in their local context and how the proposed #NBSMeasure addresses them in their eyes. 👉 Our #LAND4CLIMATE partner DEN Design Entrepreneurship Institute, with colleagues from University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna (BOKU) and Alma Mater Studiorum – Università di Bologna, will be exploring how to measure the co-benefits of NbS, more specifically the socio-economic benefits: https://lnkd.in/dCfegguu

🏔 Spanning eight countries – Nepal, Bhutan, India, China, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Pakistan, and Afghanistan – the Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH) is unique not only for its ecosystems but also the vast and varied knowledge held by the local communities who call it home. However, climate change is threatening the region at a previously unknown scale and pace, making adaptation and resilience-building more imperative than ever. Dr. David Molden, who served as Director General of ICIMOD (International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development) from 2011 to 2020, has spent decades developing sustainable solutions for mountainous regions. In an interview with REVOLVE’s Marta Asenjo Fernández, Molden discussed the impacts of climate change on mountainous regions and explained why the key to building resilience lies within the strength, knowledge, and adaptive capacity of the local communities themselves. On 01 October, over 100 experts and policymakers from Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, and Pakistan gathered in Kathmandu to tackle the pressing need to reform food systems in the Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH) region. With climate change, biodiversity loss, and food insecurity looming large, the conference explored sustainable agricultural practices to improve livelihoods, protect the environment, and secure food systems. The key takeaways were: ✅ The urgent need for climate-smart mechanization, especially in mountain communities. ✅ Emphasis on cross-border collaboration for tackling shared agricultural challenges. ✅ Advocacy for agro-ecological methods to address climate and food security threats. Notably, Aamer Hayat Bhandara, co-founder of Agriculture Republic, discussed Pakistan’s initiatives like solarizing 100,000 tube wells and tractor subsidies under the Rs. 400 billion Kissan Package. He highlighted small-scale mechanization, cooperative farming models, and digital access for rural areas. The event, organized by ICIMOD, concluded with insights from the Green Resilient Agricultural Productive Ecosystems (GRAPE) project, showcasing climate-resilient agricultural solutions that enhance soil health and increase farmers' incomes.
