There has been a lot of news and confusion surrounding avian influenza, or #birdflu, lately. While reported cases remain low, with no evidence of human-to-human transmission, it is affecting egg production. Dr. Bernard Camins, Medical Director for Infection Prevention at Mount Sinai Health System, explains that infected birds cannot lay eggs, leading to a decrease in supply. The commercially available poultry and egg supply are safe, and avian influenza is not transmitted by eating properly cooked poultry and eggs. The current risk to the public is low, as this strain of the virus doesn’t easily spread between people. However, flu viruses evolve, so public health agencies are closely monitoring the situation, and precautions are in place for those at greater risk, such as workers exposed to infected birds. #WeFindAWay #avianflu #infectiousdisease

Two years ago, we shared Molly’s incredible story of strength and hope after her initial heart surgeries at the Mount Sinai Children’s Heart Center. This Valentine’s Day and #HeartMonth, we’re so proud to share an update on this amazing little girl! Molly, who captivated everyone with her smile as a newborn, continues to flourish. She’s started school, had a magical trip to Disneyland where she met Minnie Mouse, found a passion for dance, and even lit up the stage in her school’s pageant! Molly’s journey has included specialized care, with her Mount Sinai team always providing unwavering support and ensuring she receives the best possible care. We’re especially grateful for the team who remember playing peek-a-boo with her during rounds and knowing all her favorite songs. Her next step will be back at Mount Sinai, where this dedicated team will continue to guide her heart journey. Molly’s spirit and resilience inspire us all!❤️ #WeFindAWay

A groundbreaking new study reveals that children with high-threshold peanut allergies can significantly reduce their sensitivity by gradually eating store-bought peanut butter! These findings, published in NEJM Evidence, suggest that a gradual increase in peanut exposure could be a safe and effective treatment for children who are already tolerating small amounts of peanuts. "Our study results suggest a safe, inexpensive, and effective pathway for allergists to treat children with peanut allergies," said Dr. Scott Sicherer, Director of the Elliot and Roslyn Jaffe Food Allergy Institute at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and lead author of the study. This breakthrough offers a potential game-changer for the 800,000 children in the U.S. with high-threshold peanut allergies. #WeFindAWay #peanutallergy #nutallergy #foodallergies
