Mental health research is drastically under-funded in the US despite one in four American adults (23%) having a mental health condition. This #GivingTuesday, join MQF’s fight to treat and prevent mental health conditions by making a donation that will support calculated investments in cutting-edge scientific research. #GivingTuesday #MQFoundation #MQMentalHealthResearch #WithoutResearchItsJustGuesswork

Investing in innovative mental health research to better understand, treat and ultimately prevent mental illness.
About us
The MQ Foundation, in partnership with MQ Mental Health Research, is a global mental health research foundation. We invest in multidisciplinary research on the cause, diagnosis, and prevention of all forms of mental illness to prompt the adoption of innovative treatments and public programs. We support researchers around the world, with more than 25% of MQ backed projects originating in the US. MQ Mental Health Research was founded in the UK in 2013, with an investment of $27 million from the global charity Wellcome. Building on our growing international reputation and influence, the US-based MQ Foundation was established in 2018 to expand public awareness and donations for mental health research.

October 10th is #WorldMentalHealthDay. With recent survey data indicating that mental health conditions are impacting one-half (51%) of Americans, it’s critical that we do more to fund research that leads to better treatments, better support, and faster diagnoses for everyone affected by mental illnesses. Without research, it's just guesswork. Read more from Ann Richman, our Executive Director, in her piece for Inside Philanthropy about the importance of funding in helping to close the gaps in research. #MQFoundation #MQMentalHealthResearch #InsidePhilanthropy #JoshuaRoffman #MentalHealthResearch
Here’s Why More Philanthropic Funders Need to Get Behind Mental Health Research

July is Minority Mental Health Awareness Month. And at the MQ Foundation, we’re taking the opportunity to consider how mental illness impacts marginalized communities differently. Within the US, marginalized communities are disproportionately impacted by disabilities caused by mental illness, as the challenges of mental illness are compounded by challenges faced by minorities across the country. Just as research has helped us identify these disparities, it can also help us correct them. In our latest Fellows call, the MQ Foundation is working to fund solution-oriented research that could lead to game-changing treatments for under-represented populations living with mental illness. At the MQ Foundation, we know that the most impactful and compassionate mental health research happens when people with lived experience of mental illness are helping to guide the process. That is why we’re proud of MQ’s Lived Experience Network, an ever-growing group of mental health advocates who know firsthand the difficulties of living with, or caring for someone who has a mental illness. The MQ Lived Experience Network helps our researchers to ask the right questions in the right way, set meaningful priorities and even co-produce research with patients. A gift to the MQ Foundation means support for mental health research that truly meets the needs of people living with mental illness. https://lnkd.in/eBTPYJAA #MentalHealthMonth #NothingAboutUsWithoutUs

When the first Mental Health Month took place in 1949, mental health care was in a dramatically different place. Mental illness was poorly understood and highly stigmatized — and over the past 75 years, there have been tremendous breakthroughs when it comes to education and awareness. And yet even with that progress, mental health treatment still fails far too many. For the last ten years, MQ has been making targeted investments in promising mental health research in the hopes of dramatically transforming how we provide care for people living with mental illness. To date, MQ has invested $37 million to support mental health research, directly contributing to the development of new treatments targeting a range of psychiatric disorders. Your donation to the MQ Foundation could fund the next frontier of crucial, lifesaving treatments. https://lnkd.in/eBTPYJAA #MentalHealthMonth #WithoutResearchItsJustGuesswork

It is with deep sadness that I share the news that Lea Milligan, CEO of MQ Mental Health Research, passed away on Monday after a sudden illness. Lea was a phenomenal colleague, but more than that, he was an exceptional human being. He elevated the work of MQ Mental Health Research to new heights, and we will continue our work with his passion forever in mind.
It is with great sadness that we announce the death of MQ’s CEO Lea Milligan who passed away following a sudden illness on Monday the 15th of April. There will be a time for tributes to Lea, of which there will no doubt be many. He has had a huge impact across all the many organisations and projects he was involved in and leaves behind a tremendous legacy of positivity and change. But for now, our thoughts are with Lea, his children and family as well as his many friends and colleagues. Lea was passionate about mental health and had a transformational impact on MQ. He worked hard to strengthen and develop an incredible team who will continue the momentum he started. Thank you for everything Lea. We will miss you. #TeamMQ ❤

February 26th marked the start of Eating Disorders Awareness Week, disorders that claim an increasing number of lives each year. To best reverse this trend, we must first understand eating disorders and their intersection with common causes of death. MQ Mental Health Research and the MQ Foundation advance just this sort of work, most recently funding Moritz Herle at King's College London as he tackles the question of why people with eating disorders are at a higher risk for suicide. This Eating Disorders Awareness Week, consider donating to the MQ Foundation to support this and other pressing work by clicking the link here: https://lnkd.in/eMYZ4bTi Together, we can overcome mental illness. #mentalhealthmatters #eatingdisorderawareness #mqfoundation #mqmentalhealthresearch #withoutresearchitsjustguesswork
