* Back-to-School Franchising History: Nothing happened in 1851 * Many years ago, someone created the myth that John Albert Singer franchised the Singer Sewing Machine Company in 1851, and that therefore he was the first U.S. franchisor. That turned out not to be true ...since Al Singer was only seven years old in 1851. In fact, the Singer Machine Corporation never franchised – they only gave their salaried management a bit more autonomy than was normal at the time. Later, the Harper Method Shop got the crown of “first U.S. franchisor.” Martha Matilda Harper was brilliant, and her 1891 beauty salon system was innovative and survived into the second half of the 20th century. First Lady Jackie Kennedy was a client at a Harper Method beauty shop. However, Martha wasn’t the first either. Maybe we should not be surprised, considering all his other achievements, but the first commercial franchisor in the United States was Benjamin Franklin. Ben signed with Thomas Whitmarsh a co-partnership agreement (the 18th-century term for “franchise agreement”) for a printing franchise in 1731, when we were still colonies of Great Britain. We found Ben’s original agreement with Whitmarsh in a land office in Pennsylvania, and then traced the franchise system throughout the U.S. colonies to the Bahamas, Canada, and Great Britain. There are even some records that point to Ben possibly having a franchise in Russia. What is really great is that Ben’s third franchisee was a woman, Elizabeth Timothée. Elizabeth was fluent in four languages and according to Franklin, she “managed the business with such success, that she not only brought up reputably a family of children, but, at the expiration of the term, was able to purchase of me the printing-house, and establish her son in it.” Lastly, consider that without his ongoing income from franchising, Ben might not have been able to afford the nine years he spent in France negotiating their vital support of our War of Independence. Perhaps we should celebrate franchising on July 4th  every year!
