“The Graduate Summer Intern will be integrated into the team and, by working closely with Kresge staff members, will experience what it’s like to be a program staff member at a national foundation. This will include meeting with prospective applicants and current grantees, reviewing letters of inquiry and proposals, conducting due diligence on nonprofit organizations, participating in team review discussions, and assisting with various research and analysis projects. The Fellow will have the opportunity to be exposed to the work of many of Kresge’s grantees in the college access and success field as well as explore opportunities for interdisciplinary partnerships across the Kresge program teams. Truly excited to share our latest Institute for Policy Studies Gilded Giving report, the 4th edition of our series on how wealth inequality is distorting philanthropy (and notions of generosity) in America. "Saving Philanthropy from Wall Street" explores how the broader process of financialization is finding form in the administration of giving to charity, particularly in charitable intermediaries like donor-advised funds. (In case you don't know — as many people don't, because these giving vehicles are rarefied, complex, and under-discussed — donor-advised funds function like "charitable bank accounts" that many wealthy donors use to offset their tax burdens without *any* requirement of annual disbursement. They hold an estimated quarter trillion dollars and are, on the whole, not giving as quickly as they are growing!) Financialization is a major, even existential problem for the philanthropic sector: It inappropriately generates profit for handfuls of people who are invested in the stagnation of charitably earmarked, tax-benefited dollars. Ultimately, this all shortchanges working charities' access to much-needed resources and deprives the public of the fruits of crucial tax revenue. We don't think this is what most people want, nor what Congress intended when they last meaningfully shaped the sector over 50 years ago. The Program Director will oversee the strategy, operations, and growth of the Democracy at Work Fund, playing a pivotal role in advancing the next grantmaking round. This includes leading the development of governance frameworks, establishing sustainable operating procedures, and working closely with partners to set grantmaking priorities aligned with labor movement needs.
