Municipal Credit Union
Financial Services
Our members are New York City's everyday heroes. We are proud to be their credit union.
About us
Municipal Credit Union has been serving the financial needs of our members since 1916. The credit union was chartered in response to the concern of New York City Mayor, John Purroy Mitchel, who wanted city employees to have a way to save at reasonable rates and a low cost borrowing alternative to loan sharks. MCU started out with one branch in the Municipal building using handwritten ledgers. At the end of the first year, nineteen charter account holders had combined deposits of $570. Today, we have 16 branches, more than 600,000 members and over $4.2 billion in assets. Our corporate mission is to build lifetime quality financial relationships with each member by providing competitive products and excellent service. Equal Housing Opportunity Lender. Federally Insured by NCUA.

When a split-second decision can mean the difference between life and death, true heroes rise to the occasion. We're honored to recognize FDNY Firefighter Jose Cristales for his extraordinary heroism and quick thinking that saved the life of a young New Yorker. While at home and off duty, a collision occurred at a nearby intersection. Rushing to the scene, Firefighter Cristales found a 19-year-old Brooklyn woman pinned underneath an SUV. Acting without hesitation, he got the attention of a nearby construction crew, secured a bulldozer, and used it to carefully lift the vehicle. Once he safely removed the victim from the wreckage, Firefighter Cristales performed CPR, saving her life and ensuring she received critical care until help arrived. She later made a full recovery. For his bravery, quick thinking, and putting his training into use even while off duty, MCU has awarded Firefighter Jose Cristales with its latest Hero Award. His courage and selflessness embody the values we uphold at MCU: service, dedication, and commitment to our community.
