Changing What's Possible in Cancer Care.
About us
As one of the leading cancer treatment centers in the Southeast and the only National Cancer Institute-Designated Cancer Center in South Carolina, Hollings Cancer Center at the Medical University of South Carolina combines the full range of cancer specialties to deliver a higher level of care to the patients we serve. Our team of more than 60 sub-specialists – each concentrating on a specific discipline of cancer treatment and care – works with individual patients to develop customized treatment programs that target a broad range of conditions. Our specialists work together as a team, often meeting with patients under the same roof on the same day. We are striving to deliver the highest level of care in the best way possible.

Congratulations to Hollings radiation oncology nurse Aubrey Vaccarelli! She received the MUSC Health Daisy award, an honor that's given once per month to a nurse for his or her extraordinary work. Lung cancer PA Eleanor Hardy nominated Aubrey for going above and beyond for her patients, using one patient's experience as an example. "Recently we had a patient who was apprehensive about starting radiation and chemotherapy because they were extremely nervous and overwhelmed. ...Aubrey connected with the patient from the start and with her caring attitude was able to make the patient feel comfortable moving forward....I see this patient weekly for his chemotherapy sessions and at each visit he reiterates how incredible Aubrey has been and how he could not have done this without her." Thank you, Aubrey, for your dedication to your patients!

“I always think solid tumors are the best immunologists that exist because they learn every trick in the book to prevent the immune system from getting to them. So, an understanding of how Tregs work, what makes them happy, is important both to treat autoimmune diseases and organ transplants, but also to better defeat tumors," says Leonardo Ferreira, Ph.D. His lab recently published a paper demonstrating that lowering the CAR antigen affinity reduces inflammatory cytokine production by CAR Tregs. https://bit.ly/4gL6L3p
