Challenges visitors to understand the Holocaust & confront all forms of prejudice & discrimination in our world.
About us
The Museum of Tolerance (MOT) is the educational arm of the Simon Wiesenthal Center, an internationally renowned Jewish human rights organization. The only museum of its kind in the world, the MOT is dedicated to challenging visitors to understand the Holocaust in both historic and contemporary contexts and confront all forms of prejudice and discrimination in our world today. Established in 1993, the MOT has welcomed over five million visitors, mostly middle and high school students. Visitors become witnesses to history and explore the dynamics of bigotry and discrimination that are still embedded in society today. Through interactive exhibits, special events, and customized programs for youths and adults, the Museum engages visitors’ hearts and minds, while challenging them to assume personal responsibility for positive change.

“Visiting the Museum of Tolerance deepened my understanding of the Holocaust in several ways. First, I learned about the extensive propaganda used by the Nazis to create a scapegoat in the Jewish population, portraying them as the source of Germany’s problems. This manipulation of public perception was crucial in fostering an environment of intolerance. Second, the museum highlighted the systemic nature of the genocide, showing how ordinary citizens participated in or turned a blind eye to the atrocities. This reinforced the importance of fostering tolerance and actively opposing hate to prevent history from repeating itself.” - Melanie M Thank you Pasadena Now for sharing about Ramona Convent Secondary School's theology class' visit to the Museum of Tolerance. https://lnkd.in/gThhyP6E

Today marks the beginning of #MediaLiteracyWeek, a week dedicated to highlighting the importance of developing skills to navigate media effectively. We are excited to showcase the Combat Hate! workshop, which engages students in critical thinking to recognize, reject, and respond to online hate. This online safety curriculum is rooted in foundational media literacy skills. Students are challenged to interpret examples of online hate compiled by the research department at the Simon Wiesenthal Center and examine the impact these messages have on our world.

On Sept. 20, 2024, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed AB 1805, a bill requiring Mendez, et al v. Westminster School District of Orange County, et al be included in the state’s history and social science curriculum standards. Starting on Jan. 1, 2025, the law directs a state commission to consider adopting new instructional materials on the landmark case to be taught in classes. The Museum of Tolerance has had an exhibit highlighting this court case since 2010. Many people know of desegregation as it happened in the American South, but this exhibition on the 2nd floor of the Museum, shares the story of the landmark struggles of Latino families in Southern California in 1947 almost ten years before Brown v. Board of Education. The Museum offers many Teacher Resources on our website including lesson plans for topics such as this court case. https://lnkd.in/gHU4MuMt

The Museum of Tolerance is proud to facilitate free Open Enrollment courses for California educators. Last month, the Museum hosted "Speaking Up: Interrupting Bias at School," led by Sara Wicht, an expert in social justice and anti-bias education. Participants had the opportunity to use a variety of school-based scenarios and discussion prompts to practice strategies for speaking up from positions of authority and to authority in school settings. Speakers such as Sydney Rogers, a trans activist and facilitator, spoke to educators about their influence in the classroom to interrupt biased language. For more information about upcoming Open Enrollment programs, check out our Free Professional Development page on the Museum of Tolerance website.
