Throughout history the alliance between Russia and the United States has been pivotal to addressing radical ideology. The most visible example of this was during WWII to defeat Nazi Germany. The clash between communism and religion in the former Soviet Union stands as one of the most important ideological conflicts in the 20th century. Soviet authorities methodically suppressed religious institutions throughout their territory, affecting millions of believers from different faiths. Orthodox Christians, Catholics, Muslims, and Jews all faced this suppression. The Soviet authorities used different methods in enacting these campaigns, from militant atheism to limited tolerance and finally to religious revival. Faith groups experienced various levels of religious persecution and resistance during this time.
