The progressive Muslim voice for human rights
About us
Muslims for Progressive Values (MPV) is a human rights organization founded in 2007 in Los Angeles, California. Our mission is to advocate for human rights, social justice and inclusion in the United States and around the world by inculcating a culture rooted in human rights through public education, advocacy, and the arts. In a world that has been plagued by terror and Islamophobia, MPV seeks to counter radicalization, hate and misunderstanding of Islam by fostering intercultural and interfaith dialogue on a global platform. MPV is guided by ten principles, namely: 1. Collective identity 2. Equality 3. The separation of religious and state authorities 4. Freedom of speech 5. Universal human rights 6. Gender equality 7. LGBTQI inclusion 8. Critical analysis and interpretation 9. Compassion 10. Diversity Based on these principles, MPV carries out grassroots activities, including interfaith marriages, same-sex marriages, female-led prayers and the provision of avant-garde educational materials, through its local chapters in the US, namely in Atlanta, Columbus, Washington DC, Chicago, New York and Los Angeles, and in Australia, Canada, Chile, France and Malaysia. These activities serve to promote the mission and values of MPV at the local level. On a global level, MPV carries out activities geared at advocating against human rights abuses carried out in the name of Islam in Muslim-majority states. MPV particularly monitors human rights issues in Muslim-majority countries related to women’s rights, LGBTQI rights, freedom of and from religion and freedom of expression. The main focus of MPV’s work is to stimulate critical thinking of sacred texts and to promote the implementation of progressive values, such as human rights, gender equality, freedom of expression, and freedom of and from religion and belief.

Today, not for the first time in history, an authoritarian will become the President of the United States. For some activists and advocates for human rights and social justice, this may be unchartered terrain while others may have long fought back against the oppressive claws of authoritarianism. Regardless of your experience, there are lessons to be learned and reminders to be found in the Holy Qur’an for Muslims pursuing justice and equal rights for all. May we carry these sacred lessons with us for the next 1,461 days + eternity. #IslamIsJustice

Happy #MLK Day! Today we honor this remarkable man, the legacy he left behind, and the lessons of his that should be instilled in the hearts and minds of us all. We keep this lesson, in particular, near and dear to our hearts at MPV - we will not stop our work until threats to justice are no more.

Alhamdulillah… MPV’s Statement on the now active ceasefire in Gaza. As we celebrate this ceasefire, we must also remember this ceasefire does not mean we cease in our advocacy for a #FreePalestine. Photo: AP Photo / Khalil Hamra #MPVUSA #IslamIsJustice

As we share this, we wait with bated breath to see if Israel, which has already killed 30 Palestinian since the announcement of the ceasefire, will follow through with the implementation of the ceasefire as they agreed to or if they will continue to play games of psychological warfare with the men, women, and children of Palestine. If brought to fruition on Sunday, the ceasefire will bring much needed relief to the Palestinian people, but the only thing that will end the oppression and destruction that genocide has brought to this land for 77 years is a free, unoccupied, and liberated Palestine.

Earlier this month, MPV joined a diverse coalition of faith based organizations led by the NCJW in support of the plaintiffs in the Louisiana Ten Commandments court case, affirming the right to freedom of and from religion. The coalition's work was featured in a recently published article by Religion News, which quoted MPV's Founder and President, Ani Zonneveld. "Ani Zonneveld, founder and president of Muslims for Progressive Values, which is also a party to the brief, said the Louisiana law was a 'slip into theocracy.' 'Seeing it happening in America is very problematic,' Zonneveld said. 'And for us, it’s a path to becoming a failed state.'" https://lnkd.in/g8YxEHsK

With Congress back in session, now is the perfect time to remind your elected officials that you are paying attention to the progress of HR 9495. HR 9495 was passed in the House last fall with the support of 15 Democratic Representatives who crossed the aisle and supported the non-profit killer bill that will silence non-profits who speak up for the human rights of Palestinians, reproductive rights, against deportation or ANY government policies. If you stand for the right to dissent, make sure you contact your Senators today and urge them to vote NO on this bill if it’s brought to the Senate floor. Take action: https://bit.ly/senate9495
