#ImamsForShe is MPV’s history making international advocacy program that works in partnership with local communities across Burundi, the DRC, and Rwanda to advocate for the rights of Muslim women and girls at the local, regional, and global levels. Through the program, which includes #ClubsForShe, #ImamsForShe Champions training courses, and educational workshops, we work with local partners to empower and educate Muslim women on their right to bodily autonomy, financial independence, and quality education. In conjunction with #16DaysOfActivism, we are fundraising to expand the work of MPV’s #ImamsForShe across the region to ensure that we can reach as many communities as possible in the coming years! The progressive Muslim voice for human rights
About us
Muslims for Progressive Values (MPV) is a human rights organization founded in 2007 in Los Angeles, California. Our mission is to advocate for human rights, social justice and inclusion in the United States and around the world by inculcating a culture rooted in human rights through public education, advocacy, and the arts. In a world that has been plagued by terror and Islamophobia, MPV seeks to counter radicalization, hate and misunderstanding of Islam by fostering intercultural and interfaith dialogue on a global platform. MPV is guided by ten principles, namely: 1. Collective identity 2. Equality 3. The separation of religious and state authorities 4. Freedom of speech 5. Universal human rights 6. Gender equality 7. LGBTQI inclusion 8. Critical analysis and interpretation 9. Compassion 10. Diversity Based on these principles, MPV carries out grassroots activities, including interfaith marriages, same-sex marriages, female-led prayers and the provision of avant-garde educational materials, through its local chapters in the US, namely in Atlanta, Columbus, Washington DC, Chicago, New York and Los Angeles, and in Australia, Canada, Chile, France and Malaysia. These activities serve to promote the mission and values of MPV at the local level. On a global level, MPV carries out activities geared at advocating against human rights abuses carried out in the name of Islam in Muslim-majority states. MPV particularly monitors human rights issues in Muslim-majority countries related to women’s rights, LGBTQI rights, freedom of and from religion and freedom of expression. The main focus of MPV’s work is to stimulate critical thinking of sacred texts and to promote the implementation of progressive values, such as human rights, gender equality, freedom of expression, and freedom of and from religion and belief.

The #ImamsForShe program was launched in March 2015 to address misogynistic interpretations of Islamic scripture and traditions that have led to human rights abuses against Muslim women and girls across the world. In the 9 years since the program launched, we have expanded to three countries, trained thousands of imams who have given tens of thousands of sermons in support of women’s rights, and empowered hundreds of Muslim women and girls through our #ClubsForShe programs. In conjunction with #16DaysOfActivism, we are fundraising for MPV’s #ImamsForShe program, which addresses misogynistic interpretations of Islamic scriptures and traditions that have led to human rights abuses, including violence against women and girls. We work in Burundi, Rwanda, and the DRC to train Imams to combat GBV in their communities, educate women on their right to safety and dignity, and empower girls to be human rights defenders in their community. Maslahah mursalah is a concept in Sharia law that is regarded as one of the bases of Islamic law principles. Literally translated as unrestricted benefit, maslahah mursalah refers to a type of benefit that is considered good for the public within the objectives of the shari’ah (the way). In understanding maslahah mursalah to oblige all Muslims to act in the best interest of society, we see how this principle can be used to guide laws that combat gender based violence and oblige all Muslims to act against gender based violence. In conjunction with #16DaysOfActivism, we are fundraising for MPV’s #ImamsForShe program, which addresses misogynistic interpretations of Islamic scriptures and traditions that have led to human rights abuses, including violence against women and girls. Like the Qur’an, the Hadith and Sunnah both continuously demonstrate the impermissibility of gender based violence of any sort within Islamic teachings. Instead of condoning the practice of GBV, the Hadith and Sunnah demonstrate how the Prophet (PBUH) continuously treated women with kindness, condemned any form of violence, and advocated for women’s high status in society. In conjunction with #16DaysOfActivism, we are fundraising for MPV’s #ImamsForShe program, which addresses misogynistic interpretations of Islamic scriptures and traditions that have led to human rights abuses, including violence against women and girls. While the Qur’an is clear in its instruction that gender based violence of any sort is impermissible in Islamic tradition, certain scholars and individuals, within and outside the Islamic tradition, continue to misinterpret certain verses of the Qur’an to justify gender based violence. Verse 4:34 of the Qur’an is perhaps the verse that is most commonly misinterpreted and manipulated so as to justify gender based violence. However, numerous scholars have demonstrated another interpretation, which acknowledges the Quranic teachings as a whole and the general principles of Islam, including harmony and compassion. One of the basic premises of Islam is that men and women are equal, both within and outside of relationships. It is understandable then that Islam prohibits and condemns any form of gender based violence. Indeed the Qur’an calls on individuals to fill their own relationships with harmony and peace so as to acknowledge the sacredness of human relationships. The teachings of the Qur’an go even further, demanding that Muslims stand up in the face of any injustice they witness, including an act of gender based violence. In conjunction with #16DaysOfActivism, we are fundraising for MPV’s #ImamsForShe program, which addresses misogynistic interpretations of Islamic scriptures and traditions that have led to human rights abuses, including violence against women and girls. Content Warning: Distressing images of the Palestinian genocide and detailed accounts of miscarriage, physical violence, sexual violence, and sexual harassment. Today, on this International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People and Day 5 of the UN’s #16DaysOfActivism Against Gender Based Violence, we want to highlight Israel’s gross use of gender based violence against both Palestinian men and women in their genocide against the Palestinian people. For 7 decades, Israel has used gender based violence, including sexual and reproductive violence, against the Palestinian people but over the past 419 days, they have used this violence as a weapon in its own right. Given the gross human rights violations of the Israeli government, an arms embargo, a ceasefire, and the arrest of Benjamin Netanyahu and members of his cabinet are long overdue. #PalestineDay

We're taking Day 5 of #16DaysOfActivism to acknowledge the importance of intersectionality when working to address and end gender based violence across communities. No instance of gender based violence is the same, not only because there are numerous ways that GBV can manifest and intersect with other forms of violence, but also because each individual’s identity impacts the violence they experience. Incorporating intersectionality into our activism allows us to acknowledge an individual's personal experience.
