The typical lifecycle looks like this: non-renewable resources are extracted, used in structures, demolished, and sent to landfill. That’s why startups are looking at ways to avoid unnecessary extraction, shift to regenerative materials, and improve the decarbonisation of conventional materials. And frontrunners in mycelium technologies think they have the solution 🗝️ 💡 How For building materials 🧱 Startups are creating building materials such as wall panels and styrofoam alternatives using mycelium composites. For structure 🏋️ Researchers have come up with a system to create an environmentally friendly building material they call Mycocrete, combining mycelium with knitted molds. The result is a tough, adaptable structural block with high design flexibility. For living architecture 🍄 While most are using dried mycelium to create construction materials, some are seeking to use live fungi as sensors to develop an intelligent building material.
